What is the deal? I have my entry in the challenge and have received two comments commenting on something in the photo, which is light, and saying it is something else, which it is supposed to look like something else, but it is not something else, it is light.

Can I have the Blue ribbon for fooling people with my Painting with Light Entry and having them think the light is something else when in fact I painted it with a flashlight.

I would like to disclose the info and my picture but I'll wait until the voting is over.

I probably gave you a 10 just from what you said there. I got really tired of the obvious moving light sources and much prefered the subtle ones. We'll see though.

this sort of image

has been done far, far, far too much and for little positive effect, does everyone own a red/white pointer?

And Im getting DNMC comments because its more subtle painting which is what we wolud use more in 'real life anyway'

Anyway a little vent

I feel your pain, getting the same kind of comments myself. Good Luck to you.

Looking forward to seeing comments here about obvious moving light vs. subtle illumination. Lots of good photos on both ends of the spectrum.

Well I don't know, it is still a moving light source aimed at the lens, but not totally washed out straight B/W contrast 100%. I used one of those Faraday Flashlights that require no batteries. It has a nice white LED light.

Perhaps I am too much of a literalist, but when the theme calls for a moving light source as the main illumination, I get really tired of so many entries that are just objects which are nicely lit with a stationary light source. Come on, people!! Look at the description of the theme!! Just because you used chiaroscuro well doesn't mean that you deserve a good score for this topic. Sure, it got dull looking at tons of shots of moving lasers, flashlights, etc. Still, that's kind of what the contest called for. I grant that the subtle ones started standing out, and my marks for them went up - I even went back and changed a couple scores - but I still gave no less than a 5 to anything that had a moving light source. I had to give some really nice shots 2 through 4 simply because they did not follow the theme. At least this time I didn't have to hand out any 1s; that's embarrassing in both directions, to be honest.

Perhaps you should read the description of the challenge again:

"Use a non-stationary light source (for example, a moving flashlight in your hand) as the primary method of illuminating your subject in a creative manner."

I guess I misinterpreted the description then because I did not see where it said you had to show the moving light.

I keep editing this because I keep using the wrong word.... grrr

It's possible to use a moving light source in a way that "paints" a subject in a soft even manner quite effectively. I wouldn't be so quick to judge...

"a moving light source as the main illumination"

Mine has that. My shot was illuminated with a handheld flashlight that I ran through a pattern I worked out from lots of practice and experimentation. The effect I got could not be duplicated with a stationary lightsource. BUT - my light does not appear in the shot.

If the challenge said "use a softbox as the main illumination" does that mean the softbox must appear in the shot? of course not.

I'd urge you to revisit those shots - I bet few of them are actually DNMCs, just more subtle than what you were expecting.

When I had photography in school, oh so many years ago, we were told painting with light didn't include photos where the light source was actually seen. It was considered a flaw by our teacher. I don't remember the term that was used for the other style, something like moving light, light trail, or light writing, but given there are evidently multiple definitions of painting with light I wouldn't say that one kind or the other is "what the contest called for". Now if it's a question of subtlety, you may be right. Subtle probably isn't the best way to go. It doesn't seem to have helped me any.

Although I have no actual recourse, it is taking every ounce of patience I can muster to read comments that tell me that I didn’t read the challenge description because I don’t have squiggly lights or light trails in my shot and therefore D N M C! I am so glad to see this thread where folks seem to know a little more about “Painting With Light”.
