I've been thinking that I need to get back to what I used to try to do a lot of, and now hardly ever do: taking shots of ordinary/everyday/regular things, showing them in a new light. What better way to do that than with a thirty day challenge? The 30 day B&W has certainly helped me with conversions; why not this? Could be shots of stuff from your house, outside, anywhere, and processed however you like. But it must be ordinary as you define that, and the idea (not a rule, more like a guideline) is that one shot is taken every day (no reusing existing shots). That's it.

Any takers? I'm gonna do it regardless (starting June 1, I guess), but whether anyone comes along for the ride (or whether I just post them in my profile) is up to the lot of you!

Best,

Rob

can i play alone please?
i've had a similar idea for a long time, only i was thinking about one ordinary subjet from different angles, with different light etc for 30 days
:)

Sure, the guidelines say nothing about how many ordinary objects you use . . . ;)

chele has kindly agreed to let me use two of her shots as examples of what I'm thinking of:

These are just quick examples since I was looking through Michele's portfolio when the idea dawned on me (again). There are lots of others here (there were quite a few good ones in the 30 days where I live challenge in February).

Any other takers?

Best,

Rob

That sounds like fun... particularly taking one object 30 ways.
05/28/2007 03:46:45 PM · #6
I am considering it carefully, will let you know before start date.

sign me up ... might miss a day here or there ... lots going on in June on the weekends ... but I'll put forth a valiant effort to do all 30 days!

I think the same object for 30 day may be fun
Even more if we all choose the same object
Waht do you think aboth it?

I started out doing the B&W one, but never really got into it, especially because I got too busy researching cameras. This sounds like a good one for me right now - should help me learn about my new dSLR. Right now I seem to be getting an awful lot of photos where the focus doesn't seem to be quite right.

Sounds like a blast. Great idea Rob!!

And yes would love to join.

Why not choose three objects, but one doen't have to choose all three at the same time, but one can choose all three if thay want to, ot just one or even two of the items.
Kitchen items would give up a great selection to choose from, re which ones would be best.

Whisk
Wine bottle opener,
Forks
Egg Beater,
Spoon,
Grater,
Colinder,
Strainer,
Kettle,
Teapot,
Cup & Saucer
Wine glass,
Mug Holder Stand,
Wine stipper,
Tongs

The list is endless.

I think it would be more interesting if we didn't choose all the same items, so that we can see differant verion of everyone images, to learn from.....

I would be interested in being involved, as it is a great idea.....

I'd sure like to try this.

Okay, first: all are welcome. Join!! The more the merrier . . .

It sounds (looks?) like we have two "strands" of interest here, which is fine. I doubt everyone will be able in two days or so to agree to do exactly the same thing, but so long as people are taking this on in a way that's useful for them, I'll be quite happy and I'm sure it will be useful.

For the first couple of days (especially in our first post) each of us should say what we're doing, but after that it should be pretty apparent.

The two strands:
1. Shooting a different ordinary object each day, or at least most days;
2. Shooting the same object for all thirty days (with variations on this).

This way people can focus (no pun intended) on what they want to, but we all stay within the spirit of this rather "ordinary" side challenge. Editing rules are up to you, but it's within the spirit of the challenge to share tips and processing with the other participants (again, more of a guideline than a rule). The only other "guideline" is the idea that each shot is taken on the day it is posted.

We'll start June 1, and you are welcome to join, leave, complete, not complete, whatever, as the spirit moves you. No wet noodle lashings for anyone who does their own thing (unless of course you're into wet noodle lashings, and then I'm sure someone here will be willing to accommodate you).

This should be fun. I'll start a new thread before going to bed on the 31st of May, so that anyone who wants to get started can do so before I'm up the next morning. We'll use server time to start, so please, no posts before June 1 NY time.

We can continue to use this thread to sort out whether people want to choose one object, three, etc., so that people with a similar take on the challenge can group up. I'll also post the list of participants from here in the first post of the new thread, but of course anyone can join at any time.

This should be good fun!

Best,

Rob

I wanna join. Sounds like a great learning tool. It'll be my first 30 day challenge.
05/29/2007 02:03:29 AM · #19
Count me OUT of this one. I am doing a lot of picture as it is for the challenges and after the B&W I need a break.
05/29/2007 02:20:51 AM · #20
Count me in .... I need a kick in the butt to get myself back in the habit of shooting different (non-animal) subjects and uploading the results.
05/29/2007 07:39:22 PM · #21
I'll be going for a variety of items. That way I'll be able to take inspiration from what others are doing when my own creativity hits a dry patch. Of course I don't want to copy, but to put my own take on things.

BestRob! What an excellent idea! I like the version of shooting a different object every day. Me, I get bored easily, and also, I like to hunt. So finding a new thing each day will be fun.

The submitting and commenting for the BW side challenge was crazed. Along with DPL, I got a little overwhelmed. So - as all of you - I will do the best I can.

Funny, I was just thinking about how I used to shoot all sorts of stuff directly around me and now I go way out of my way to get good photos - not that it has effected my scores any, mind you.

When should the start date be?
05/30/2007 02:39:43 AM · #23
I'd like to do this if I get a camera in time! Sounds like a really neat idea. :-)
05/30/2007 02:43:42 AM · #24
I would like to participate too!
05/30/2007 02:52:01 AM · #25
I think this really sounds like fun! Im really going to try to do all 30 days this time too, (gah). I like taking more natural pictures anyways...
