I shot a portfolio of a kid and would love to get your feedback. I am seriously looking at taking this up professionally so a honest feedback will be welcome. It would be great if you can tell me what went wrong and where (i know there are far from perfect!)

Left you some comments...I think they're all great. Keep looking, seriously.

I agree with the others... a little brighter highlight in the eyes would make the kid look more alive. This can be handled in post with a little bit of dodging and a little bit of sharpening on the eyes.

Quick example:

Not bad, but not outstanding. Why sepia? (just asking out of curiosity)

No. Too much cutting of limbs in the middle, fingers cut off, etc.

The best of these. The BG is IMO too dark and muddy, and his eyes could use some color/catchlight as they are now they are just big black holes.

snapshot - and I mean that in the most soccer-mom walmart kind of way. Sorry.

On the other hand - the definition of a good picture is when the client is happy and the photographer got paid.

Find a local PPA chapter or meeting and attend. If you can check out any of their photo competetions, or get to look at a Loan Collection book your mind will be blown away.

Here are some great things to know when shooting children.

Guidelines are just that. There always is room for experimentation.

I have tried to address the issue of cropped hands and soft eyes here - are these better than the previous 4 posted by me ?

Take a look at this web site:

Audrey Woulard

She's one of the best examples of children's photography I've seen. She participated in one challenge here which is how I found her. Audrey It's too bad she didn't participate more -- we would have learned a lot about portrait work from her.

Check out how clear and sharp her eyes are in the photos. Her blog has really great stuff on it.

my personal tastes are for children photo's, I like bright colorful backgrounds that compliment the colors the kid is wearing.
I also like to shoot kids at their eye level, not down at them.
couple of the pictures look on the dark, moody side. For kids, I'd rather have the bright , cheerful look.
but! kids are hard hard to shoot cuz they have the attention span of a fly and the speed of a cheetah haha.

great shots capturing this child!! keep it up and post up more!
