I am only 11 years old and it is my first time submitting a photo. Mine is battleship. I don't understand some of the words you are useing. Like grainy, And people are being mean. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all!!! I would like to know what I can do to make a better picture and I can't do that when people don't help out.

#1 Bronco Fan - Congratulations on your first photo challenge. You look like a really smart kid and I will bet that your future pictures will get better and better. I looked up your camera to see if you were just limited by a bad camera, but that is not the case. (Yours is better than mine!) My first suggestion is that you really read over the manual that came with the camera and take lots of photos of the same thing with the camera set on different settings to see what the differences are. That is really the best way to learn what your camera can do. As far as your Battleship photo... a few things that might have helped you out is 1.) lighting, it looks like you might not have had enough light. 2.) your resolution setting...although the final photo needs to be 640x480 you may need to take the picture at a higher resolution to keep the photo from looking like it is a bad tv screen (that is what they mean by grainy). And then fix it in a whatever software you have to work on your photos.

I think that it is great that a young man like you are getting interested in photography. And I hope that you will get some help from the people on this site. I know I have learned alot since I have been here and and still learning. My son wants to enter a photo soon, now I might just let him too. Good Luck!

I for one am glad you are here, this has been a great place for me to learn and I hope you get something out of it too. I looked at your picture and it looked interesting from the angle you took it. What they ment when they said grainy is that the picture looks a little like a fuzzy tv signal, that is caused by either too much light or not enough, in your case it was not enough. If a picure is too dark try taking another either with a light on or using the flash. I hope all the mean comments you have gotten don't make you shy away from photogrophy, it is really fun. The biggest thing to remember is that a good photo is one you like, it dosen't matter what other people think, so take pictures of things you find interesting the rest will follow. If you have any questions send me an e-mail and I will try to answer it. Welcome aboard and good luck.

Greetings and welcome to the hobby of photography.

When I got started in photography, I spent a LOT of time looking at other people's work and trying to duplicate it to the best of my abilities. Learning what you like and don't like about certain photographs is one of the best ways to become a better photographer. The DPChallenge forum is a good tool in itself for becoming a good photographer. When you vote on a photograph, leave the photographer a comment and tell him/her what you do and don't like about the photo.

This is called 'critiquing' a photograph. I have found that 'critiquing' other people's work is making me a better photographer as well. This is part of the process of learning what you do and don't like about photos. As I setup to take new photos, I remember a lot of the things that I say to other photographers about their work and utilize those comments on my own with each new photo that I take.

Becoming a good photographer takes a little time. Do not get discouraged by comments that you get on this site. A majority of the comments that you get here will be much like the ones that I get. They are generally not critical of your photo. When someone IS critical of your photo, do not take it personally. "Critique" is the main reason I'm here to begin with. When someone doesn't like my photo, if they will tell me why they don't like it, I can use that information to make better photos next time.

Since you have access to a digital camera, I have a suggestion for you. Your Battleship photo is receiving the comment that it is 'grainy'. This means that the image quality is poor and there are 'speckles' in the photo.

Graininess in a digital photo can be caused by several things. First of all, you could try to redo this photo with less zoom. Secondly, you could add more light. You can either use the flash on the camera, or you can move the setup outside or close to a window where the natural sunlight will light up your image for you.

Since this is your FIRST photo, I would highly recommend that you try to recreate this SAME photo but make it better... It doesn't cost anything for you to play with the digital camera... Work on this photo until YOU think it is as good as it can be and then let's take a look at it together and talk about the improvements :)

Keep up the good work!

I thank you all for the tips about the camera. I'm going to take my picture again tryto do better with no grain in it. I'll use the techniques you told me. Thank you all that are being kind to me. And I'm hoping one of you win for being so nice to me. You are great. I hope to learn more as time goes on. :) :) Do you mind Jmsetzler and digiteyes if I send the finished one to you, so you can tell me how I did?
Thanks
Zachery

I am hoping that you will not allow a few people to discourage you from your new hobby. Photography is like anything else, it take practice and more practice to become great. You have the determination and desire to prove yourself, the rest is just learning. Be patient with yourself, and understand that it takes time. We are here to support you all of the way.

I think it would be fun to maybe have a "kids week", in addition to or instead of type thing - let our kids take a crack at it every once and awhile. They tend to have a much different look on life then we do (usually better). Think I will take this to the forum for challenge ideas. :)

#1 Bronco Fan, never let "adults" or bad impersonations of adults discourage you. Good luck to you and I hope to see more from you. I like your signature too!! :D

manic, look at it this way, finally a week off from obsessing about that weekly challenge! I'd actually appreciate it and get some work done for a change, so my boss would be happy, too! Of course, no later than Tuesday of that week I'd have serious withdrawal . . . ;o)

Don't fight the addiction! Just get a job that means you can sit on the internet all day and hit refresh on the dpc homepage once a minute... like I've ended up doing ;o)

I am not sure what ALL this mumbo jumbo means, but I am the parent of the little guy you want to go away. I say YOU GO AWAY or get off your NO KIDS kick. He has every right to be here as you do. Is it, that you'll find it hard to control your bad attitude? Anyway, I give my permission for Zachery Blake to submit photos here and for anyone to view them. I hope that works for the April 2000 LAW. ??

I thank all of you for supporting my boy (# 1 Bronco fan). He was a little upset when he didn't understand some of the comments people were making, so I told him to put it in the forum. I am very proud of him for hanging in there. Maybe I could learn from what you all teach him! :)

That would be a great excuse to go reproduce :)
