Hey, ok well i do like this shot, i know its oof which was not intentional at the time of photographing it (accidently had it set to f2.8 :P) but, i kinda think it works in this photo, i like the colors in it too. What do yall think? Is it a little TOO oof?

hey Kawana... actually, I like the shot - good DoF, and nice bokeh in the bg. It does seem just a bit to oof - hope you don't mind, but i played with it a bit:

-- Image hidden at the request of kawana -- (roba)

Just a bit of sharpening applied to the center of the flower and the center of each leaf. Toned down the bg a bit, and cranked up the sat on the yellow & green. Kind of a quick hack at it, but i like the contrasting tones.

eta: the blown-out areas in the bg are really hard to overcome. If that had been all green - this would really pop. ;o)

the background does not compliment the subject

This shot has a couple of things that could be improved on. First, the crop has the flower centered in the frame and there is too much "extra" stuff going on around the subject. My suggestion would be to zoom in on the flower and really fill the frame. This will help eliminate some of the white light in the background.

The colors are nice, but this photo needs more contrast to really make it pop. Convert it to B&W, clone out the white lights in the background, levels, sharpen, and viola...

The black and white sure brought out the detail in the petals.
That back left petal was a tad over exposed. I love to see all the textures on the flower. I think the new crop and conversion helped a lot.
I took about 10 shots of this one to get the details the way I wanted it. (It was my 2nd choice for Rule of Thirds)

I'm not seeing anything blown out on my monitor.

Not in the edited picture the original was a bit overexposed, you did a great job with the edit.

I like the photo quite a bit as it is. I think, however, that the main flower is a bit too centred, and that if it were me, I'd concentrate on one flower and try to keep "distractions" (the half flower sort of in focus at the top left, the spent flower and bud at bottom left) to a minimum. I like the stripey b/w background with the light spots, and also the out of focus stripey leaves. The yellows and greens are beautiful.

for a challenge with advanced editing, is cloneing out a hot spot, like those patches in the background, against the rules?
