On the left hand side, have a small profile box w/ one selected image from a different users portfolio. This gives a random user a little exposure, and perhaps bring in some comments/critiques from the masses that have time to spend on the site. I know I like to see images from those obscure users that aren't high profile.

Cool! I second that motion. You can be the first one; I'll be second. Then it can be random :P

I like this idea, too. Would the user be able to select which image is displayed?
12/09/2003 01:30:35 PM · #4
I would say either user selects, or council.. Or you could take a vote from the masses from all the images, current winner is displayed (some coder behind dpchallenge hates this idea).

This would be a great idea. If it's to be done, i can't wait to see it

That is a very interesting idea, cant be too hard to do its like a random picked photo like they do on other sites like
fotolog
orDPPortfolio

I think it's a great idea too!!

Definitely sounds like a great suggestion. There's a tremendous amount of talent on this site which sometimes is overlooked or obscured by the more well known talent (no offense intended toward the well known talent here at all...keep up the great work!). I know I have been clicking around sometimes checking out the photo gallery and come across some absolutely wonderful photos by some photographers that are never 'in the lime light' so to speak. This would be a great way to give exposure to those photographers and their work.

I like this idea. Although I think users should move the photos that they want to be displayed into a special folder in their portfolios. A lot of images in portfolios are there only for forum purposes.

Like I wouldn't want this photo to be displayed on the front page for example.

Awesome idea, specillay for we who dwell in the nether regions of challenge results that get little or no exposure.

Darn you! Darn you to HECK all you... you... um... wait... oh yeah, you photographically-talented-ribbon-winning-weirdos :P (mostly my little bro Jacko... freak)

Very true, Gary. You have a good point. Although, I happen to think all your photos are wonderful. Oh to have the talent of Kiwiness...only in my dreams!

That's what I was thinking, too, Kiwi. Maybe there can be a box that can be marked if we want it displayed so that we can still have the photos arranged in folders as they are. In addition to having photos that I wouldn't want displayed, I also sometimes have others' photos that I've been modifying or something and I can just see one of those being chosen for display. :)

Yep, that's even better. A check box is a lot easier than moving images into different folders.

we used to have it so that users' most recent submissions showed up under their names in the forums. i see that there's a switch in our preferences to turn that on or off, but i don't think it's working. that was really helpful because it helped associate names with "faces," so to speak...

can we bring that back?

no?

I like the idea of the profile of the day. Until then, if you click on the word photos in the menu bar on the front page, you will get random users portfolios down at the bottom. A cool little feature many may not know about. :)

I know this is really old, but I found this and thought I'd bring it back up. It is a good idea. I know It wouldn't be too hard, critique club is randomized, I hope! lol.

Great idea!! Did it die on the drawing board?

i love this idea! since the pics are numbered, why not just have a random selection. Let's see it!
Oh & Jacko, do you really need anymore exposure! You're a superstar here!
:)

Great idea. How about giving those that are already in someone's favorites low or no priority. So the one's being displayed aren't favorites yet.

Or give priority to those that have one or fewer critiques.

Random is best I think, though maybe random using one photo per person as a criteria so it moves around and doesn't favor those with large portfolios.

yes, mucky, would be nice to see this working again. I agree.

I also like the left bar photo of the day type thing. I think it could also be a nice way of introducing photographers, stir discussion, and expose prints available on dpcprints.

If you click the word "Community" in the title bar, after all of the posts active in the last 24 hours, underneath "recently added favorites" you do get a random selection of user profiles. (Since I've never seen any without a picture, I think this list may require a profile pic for you to be "chosen"...)

The problem with a random "Photo of the Day" or "Profile of the Day" is that with 20,000 users, it would take like 55 years for everybody to get their "day of fame" on the front page.

Have a photo-slot by the admin announcements on the left which loads a random photo and the photographer's name/profile link each time the home page is refreshed. If you really want to chew up bandwidth it could load the photographer's profile pic as well.

Make an entry box on the preferences page where the photographer can entry the Photo_ID number (like we do for displaying thumbs) of one (or more?) photos they'd like to be in the rotation pool.

That way it can be the photographer's choice whether to display their best, favorite, or most underrated photo. And while every member may not see every profile, surely a lot of members will see photos by people they don't know.

We could also exclude anyone who hasn't logged-in in the last six months or so, so the number might not be quite 20,000.
