I saw this little guy today when I was walking near the park. I had my olympus with me because I had been photographing the geese, and decided to take pictures of this bird. At first I just thought I was lucky. Then I got closer to the bird, and it didn't move. I thought it was dead and sitting there, actually. Then it began making odd sounds and bobbing its head. Then it let its mouth hang open. Then it fell off the rock and people were staring, so I walked away.
Just curious,
what kind of bird is this?
There is another photo in my portfolio showing the markings on its head and face.
Photos haven't been edited.

Edit: Forgot to put in the thumbnail. Sorry.

I always thought these were just finches. I've got a bunch of pictures of em. Guess I was wrong...

That's an awesome picture by the way.

Atleast I got a couple shots before the bird started acting manic.
=P
Those weren't awesome pictures..
XD

Maybe it was acting manic because it was afraid of you and wanted to make itself look unappetizing : )

If there were berries about, the bird may have been drunk. My last apartment, I was good for 4-6 drunk birds on my balcony every year due to the berries on the tree right next.

Nah.
I live in northern Minnesota.
We've barely started getting grass.
I doubt there were berries..
Unless they were there from last fall..
I suppose its possible.
They really get drunk from berries?

maybe he choked on a bug? Or maybe he was playing dead? Or...maybe he just plain didn't like you :)

A.I. has reached the US! Bust out the surgical masks and ration out the food. ;)

A.I. = Avian Influenza = Bird Flu

Please tell me you're kidding.
Oh god.
That'd be an awful way to go.
However I'm curious.
When one contracts bird flu do they begin to act like a bird?
Hmm..
That'd explain my spontaneous leaps from the roof last week..

I would say that this is a female English House sparrow.

A.I. isn't that bad. I spent all fall/winter swabbing migratory bird poop and duck butts. Other than a high fever...there was nothing a good strong Crown 'n Coke couldn't cure ;) (like tonight...so please excuse any spelling errors).

After I found myself in the yard digging for worms before the sun came up (you know the saying!) I stopped by the docs office and got my self the super secret government bird flu shot. All is well now! Except for the egg I laid this spring...luckily it didn't hatch.

Ok enough thread-jacking. OP, if you are serious about wanting to know what happened to your model, I will look some stuff up at work on Monday.

I will concur, on first glance. I don't have my Sibley's (sp) book on hand.

My dad identified mine as a Song Sparrow a few weeks ago. He's an avid birder and a registered falconer. Birds have been his hobby since he was a teen. I trust the guy.

I figured out what was wrong with it.
Turns out one of the Parkside residents had left it on the rock.
The little bird ran into her window and she wasn't sure if it'd come to or not.
I found out by asking the man who's property the bird was on.
His wife left it there.
I kinda feel sorry for the little thing.
=(

It's a pterydactyl!

If he had his mouth open, he's still a babe and mom should be feeding him. The babies are as large as the adult birds once they fledge.

Its mouth wasn't open like begging for food.
Just a crack..
Kinda like he was saying
"I can't breathe!"
Yeah.
I've nursed many a crow into adulthood.
I think this bird is an adult.
Although I'm not sure.
I didn't even know what species it was.
Apparently some sort of sparrow.

Have a look at the "Chipping Sparrow" on this page. I believe that it matches your photo, though your photo is much better.
Brown Birds page

A traumatic experience like hitting a window can cause a bird to go into shock and die, even if it isn't otherwise injured physically. I suspect that this is what happened to the one that you saw. : (

I think it looks more like the American Tree Sparrow. Don't ask me, though. Whenever I see one of those birds I just think "finch" and move on!
