Ok so there are at least three of us who do not have voting privileges for at least 30 days, and we'd still like to play. So we came up with the idea of having a 30 day side challenge, focused on Black and White photography. I thought we'd start May 1, although I will not be submitting every day. I find I cannot keep up with it.

NOTE: This is just a tally list. Even if your name is not on the list once the official thread goes up on May 1 - you can still play! I'll post a link here to the new thread.

POST YOUR PICS HERE!

Who wants to join me?

Here's WHO (so far!):

i'm wondering if we can do the b&w for a week and something else for another week .. etc etc ... like i said to michelle, my lens is a bit limiting and it can be a very hit and miss thing getting a sharp image, which i feel doesnt go well with b&w all the time ...
i did suggest some expert editing as well in this project ..???????? ..:)

I like the idea of a 30 day b&w with no rules! I hardly ever enter the challenges. I find the side challenges more fun :)
04/26/2007 12:56:37 AM · #4
I'm in! I'll try to get one in everyday. (Try being the key operand, lol). Roz...there would be no rules...just entries...of whatever you'd like to do!! Yipeee!

I'm always for B&W photos, my favorite kind of photography, I would like to participate, maybe not every day but hope that's fine?!!

so wots it to be .. ??
b&w & wotever you want .. OR ..???? ... i personally dont want to be limited to b&w for the entire time ... and bit of expert never goes astray!!!! :)

Editing is the photographers choice I say. You can do minimal or expert. You decide.

I am TOTALLY involved.. I LOVE Black & White, I can understand roz wants a bit of variety. Im easy about the rules etc however I really do like the idea of B&W (im a B&W freak) . Either way count me IN...

Will this be like a daily FREE STUDY in B&W? with free editing?

Starting May 1st ?..... woohoo, Im down

if i could take b&w like you marac, then i'd be a happy little vegemite ..
that's an aussie saying ... vegemite is a savoury spread with a salty flavour that ppl just love on toast, especially in the morning ... there was an advert years ago that had kids being happy .. and of course it was because they all ate vegemite ... wot tha !! ..

I'm in (as long as we are allowed a little toning of our B&Ws)

Roz "B&W for 30 days" thats why it is a challenge :)
you can still take other photos and upload no one is saying you can only take B&W for a month but the challenge is to take at least one a day for conversion to B&W
go on challenge yourself... its all about the light, you will learn so much if you try
thinking of the scene without the colors opens up a whole new world

vegemite on toast now thats B&W :)

Hey roz.. the whole world knows that VEGEMITE tastes horrid and that the REAL savoury spread is actually MARMITE... but that aside, I think you can take some great shots for B&W and if you need any info about converting to B&W and effects please email me I will be very happy to help all I can..

I'll think about doing this as well, I love the 30-day challenges and haven't been involved in one in a while.

thank you marac .... you forgot to mention PROMITE!!!!! lol lol ...
and i was going to say i'd ask for help closer to when we actually start ... coz i'm gonna need it!! .. then i realised we start in four days ... at the moment i'm so ignorant about b&w that i dont even know wot to ask , but dont worry!!, i'll bombard you with questions very very soon!! ..

Ya know, I've never really been a real fan of black & white because I've always labled it as "easier" than color shots, but I'd like to prove myself wrong. So...CAN I PLAY TOO??

:)

and ok ... i've just read this entire thread thru and it looks like the majority rules .... B&W IT IS!!! ... but with expert editing, which was obviously just to please me!!!! lol lol
i think this will be another excellent learning opportunity, coz i've always loved b&w a lot more than colour in some ways ... i find it more atmospheric sort'v ... but as i said earlier in this thread, i find my lens a bit limiting and its a hit & miss thing as to whether i can get a really sharp image ... so any useful tips would be greatly appreciated ..
edit .. somehow i missed your post in here keith ... firsty .. so i guess you'd be getting a laugh about my last comment .. 'any useful tips would be greatly appreciated'!! .. :) ...
edit again .. and i can just imagine you shaking your head in dismay, if you read the bit about it being a hit & miss thing getting a really sharp image with my lens!!:)

I will try this 30 day B&W challenge. It might be fun, plus my new Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 is: OUT FOR DELIVERY

The proof will come very fast as good B&W is much harder to pull off than color.

I'm down for another 30 day challenge.

And Roz, why can't you get sharp images with your lens?
Is it still under warranty?

I like the idea of Black and White editing free for all. Why not B/W with some spot color, B/W gone sepia, B/W toning etc.

Roz, take your pics in color and then convert. Try that. AND since I just said that, could you all tell me what you do to get great contrasty B/W images? Mine usually seem flat.

Excellent - glad people want to play. May 1 start ok?

Curves is a good tool for getting good tones, if you use the droplet tool on curves black and ehit one (the grey does not have much effect unless you using it on a colour image) if you select the Black droplet tool and click on the photo where you want it to be total BLACK, then do the same with the white, you will see nice tones in your shot. Then add contrast to taste.

i think its coz i'm a pretty ordinary photographer .. coupled with the fact that i'm a very slow learner ... !! .. :)
i use a Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II for Canon, which i have been told doesnt have a good quality glass .. i was considering buying a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro and used owen owen's for a day .. and i did get some very sharp images .. there's an image of a contortionist on my profile page .. i combined three photographs and cropped a whole lot and the result was pretty sharp .. there's no way i could'v got such a result with my tamron ..
i understand that i cant blame the equipment i use for my 'bad' photographs all the time, but i've been told that a better lens would give me a much better result .. :) ..

edit .. its also started to 'stick' ... and sometimes when i use AF it just doesnt take ... dont know if its me doing something wrong .. or something wrong with the lens itself .. so great suggestion about the warranty ..

I would ike to drop in occasionally, but not very often, as I have many bad days and not many good ones at present, so I hope that will be ok with everyone.....
