There's a photography contest that I wanted to enter, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some comments on either of these two images, as I'm trying to decide what to enter in the contest.

Thanks!

whats the criteria for this contest?

I want to enter a photo in the nature picture category, which they define as any picture taken in the wild without any evidence of the "hand of man." I think that both of these photos fits that criteria. Photos may be digitally enhanced or manipulated.

The photos are judged on composition, technique, and impact. Points are deducted for no center of interest, poor focus, poor exposure, areas of bright distracting light, or background is cluttered or disturbing.

Thank you for any comments you can offer!

Looking at the thumbnails, I would have said the leafy one, but looking at the full size, I'm no so sure.

The green one is okay except that there are some out of focus areas. The right side of the picture's focus seems to be substantially better than the center, unfortunately, at first glance, people go to the center, and they may or may not look long enough to see it is more a shallow dof thing than an oof thing.

The beach has a decent, balanced composition, but the light is kinda flat and even, making it less dramatic than possible. I think with the right post-processing, it could really kick some butt. Maybe PM Brad and see if he could help you, or bear_music. Both guys are really nice and really know their way around photoshop.

Why not one of these?

I agree -- I would start with something along this line ...

For this I used a simple RGB Curves adjustment layer, with the layer mask filled with a gradient aligned along the diagonal and adjusted with its own Curves adjustment. This let me lighten/boost contrast in the beach area while leaving the water relatively unaffected.

I then used a high-radius Unsharp Mask setting of 12%/48 dia/TH = 0 to boost the contrast, followed by a light application of "regular" USM at 55%/0.5 dia/TH = 5 to accentuate the foreground detail, and make the rocks look wet.
