So I'm asfter your ideas 'cause I'm stuck :)

For a photography course we've been aksed to shoot modern still life - not 80's still life, not 90's still life - but modern 21st century still life (kitchen implements and bowls of fruit have specifically been banned :-)

I can't get beyond an mp3 player as an idea for shooting?

Can you wise people think of subjects for this decade for still life?

Maybe a collection of the various bottled drinks that are now available, sports drinks, flavored water, chilled coffee, etc. Good potential for different colors, sizes and shapes.

There is still life all around you. You can get ideas from your desk. bedside table, your coffee table, garden shed, tool shed, mailbox, the possibilities are endless!
Thats what I love about still life.

Thanks Tim! Really liking your suggestion, as there are alot of new drinks around, and their bottles/colours would make for interesting subjects.

As well as them being easier for me to get hold of than all the modern technolgies I keep thinking of :)

The other day I was shooting seagulls by the river. There was a dumpster near the parking lot close by, and lying on the ground near it was a pile of Redbull cans...some crumpled, others not. There must have been ten or twelve of them.

It looked like someone had had a Redbull party, and why they didn't toss the cans in the dumpster, but into a neat little pile right beside it is beyond me.

I made a mental note shoot some pics of them after finishing with the birds. Sadly, like so many notes I make to myself (mental, paper or otherwise)...I forgot.

My point is that in still life I think context is often overlooked in favour of content. It's not enough just to capture the objects, but to find them where they make some kind of impact (aesthetically or socially or culturally, etc).

Re posting the pics here, I'll see, I have to shoot this on medium format film initially so these prolly won't make it on to dpc (i don't have access to a scanner). Maybe next time I'll shoot some on the digi too... And the shoot is studio based, i didn't say that before, but I do like your idea about the context.
