Sounds good to me. I have never been there, so it will be new territory for me. I have never taken time to stop in the upper Keys long enough to look around.
Here is a link for a lot of history and info about the Keys.

edit to correct the link.

Hey!!! I've been gone for a while, but im back. I just saw this post and decided to check it out. I love the idea, ofcourse you can count me in. I had the pleasure of meeting yakatme at a moon rise in south beach, great guy is all i have to say. I will be checking here often to see where this goes.

Hey Alain - good to see you back here again. This GTG has had a lot of interest and it should be good one. Easy enough for you to make since it starts right here in Miami. Hopefully, some specifics about the itinerary will be set soon.

This sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should plan to meet up in the visitors center near the entrance just in case the mosquitos are bad.

The visitors center is quite large, air conditioned, and I think that it has a meeting room. Whether it has a meeting room or not, it's large enough for a group of people to mingle around while waiting on the rest of the group to show up. There is also some possible photo ops in and around the visitor's center, a lot of displays with good information, and a good gift shop with lots of books on the area.

What do we do for hotels? Are we going to stay in lower keys for few days then middle then upper?
05/21/2007 10:41:23 PM · #85
We're going to work our way down. Starting on the northern end and going south.

We do need to get the hotel situation worked out, though.

We should camp out! lol

Swamp angels would love that. They are always hungry for new blood.
Actually, the weather is usually good in mid Oct, with the first cool front normally about the first or second week of Oct. Either way, mosquitoes would make it tuff going. A cool front would bring a heavy rain as well for a few hours.
I like the visitor center plan.
I hope we don't get any hurricane pics.

Alright, are we all still on the same page with this GTG? I think we'll go ahead and purchase airfare toward the end of next week. Spirit has some pretty good prices, and I'd hate to miss out. Has anyone started putting together a loose itinerary with some places to sleep.

is the date 2-9 october still?
06/29/2007 02:23:03 PM · #90
I would love to make this GTG but am not sure if I will be able to get any time off. I will keep an eye on this thread and if I can swing it, maybe I can at least make it for the first few days.

OCT 2-9 are the days that the wife and I have off, so those are the days we'll be there. I am pretty sure that's still the plan.

That would be great. I'm waiting for that as well.

Well, it's been two weeks and this little GTG seems to have fallen off the map. :)

I'm still hoping to make it, as I will have completed teaching my class by then. The only issue I have now is the fact that I'll be taking over my boss' job a couple of weeks before the planned dates. That puts my schedule in flux a bit, but I should still be able to make it. (Gotta check the finances also. :)

Have there been any new developments as far as an itinerary?

I think Robert is running this GTG I sure hope it still is on

I'm not exactly running it, but I'll see what I can do. Wayne ( wmprkg) took the reigns on this GTG and he and I had been talking about making it happen. I'll get in touch with him and see what's going on.

Don't write this one off. I definitley want to see this turn out to be a memorable get-together.

Stay tuned.

I will have a very large bone to pick (whatever the hell that really means) if this one falls apart. Especially since we booked our flight a couple of days ago. We get into Ft Lauderdale early on the 2nd and fly out late on the 9th. So, even if it falls apart, someone had better get ready to be my tour guide...and buy me beer....please.

Anyway, we'd like to see this one stick together.

Well I'm still in! Its months away yet, and I can't really predict my work schedule until its a little closer, but if I can't do all 5 days I'll do as much of it as I can. I WILL be seeing my sweet haven, Key West, again before the year is done! :)

Whether it happens or not, (and I'm confident that it will) I'll be happy to play tour guide and buy you beer for flying down here.

I just PM'd Wayne to let him know about the recent posts regarding the concerns about this GTG. I'm just glad that I happened to check in tonight and that I saw this thread. I've talked to a lot of people who are definitely interested. Now it's just a matter of somebody doing the legwork to finalize some details like hotels and some sort of itinerary.

Just wait until you try a Rumruner from the Islamorada Tiki Bar. You might not want to go back to beer :)
