And maybe even day to day schedule. This way I can see if I can make it for at least part of GTG.

I think that we can count on those dates. I'll call Wayne if he doesn't log in to see the recent input. I don't think that he has any reason not to go with these dates and he has updated the first post to show these dates only.

As far as a day to day schedule Nicolai, we need to see what everybody thinks that we should do for that. It was my idea to go with the 2,2, and 2 nights in the three sections of the keys. However, with some people thinking that they might just show for the three day weekend in Key West, I have recently suggested making this something like 2, 1, and 3 kind of schedule with the 3 nights being in Key West. There is a lot to do there and it would probably work out well for those who can get away for a 3 day weekend.

Remember, in the initial post, Wayne indicated that we are in the planning stages and would like to get input from as many people as possible that want to attend. If we can organize this around your ideas and wants, then it is more likely to be a successful GTG.

So please, comment on the ideas put forth in this thread so far (comments on dates are noted) and add any suggestions that you might have. I agree that something more concrete needs to be established, and that will probably start happening soon. But until then, let's hear some more ideas.

Stay tuned.

Already looking into it, brother. It looks like it will need to be mid-May of next year, but we'll get to that in another thread soon.

I am wide open and will trust you floridians on this one.

I can do three days about any time, maybe not a week though.
My niece and nephew have started planning an annual family trip including me to somewhere out west, Co I think, and last year was Oct 4 thru 10th. That plan is not made for this year yet, so I would be fine with the early Oct date for the GTG.

Count us in.

That was easy enough.
I will let my family know so that they can plan our out west trip in September this year, as we want to go more to the north than last year.
Lucky me, I get to go to the Keys Saturday, by boat from the Fl west coast. : ) Robert yakatme planned to go, but family matters this weekend bumped his opportunity until a fishing trip comes along in a few weeks.

Well, the dates were settled a couple of days ago. Now it's time to get some shooting ideas and locations and then figure out places to stay around those ares.

Here was one suggestion...

Bahia Honda State Park

That would be for the Key West part of the trip since it's very close to there.

For me, ideas for shooting locales in the Upper Keys and Key West are the easiest. It's the Middle Keys that I am vague on specifics. One thing is for sure, just by driving you can find beautiful views across the blue/green shallow water to mangrove islands. Polarizers do wonders down there. There are also interesting photo ops when the charter boats bring in their catches.

In the Upper Keys there is a place called the Wild Bird Santuary. Feeding time is around 3:00 pm and there are hundreds of water birds within the 70mm range. 200mm will easily get you a full frame shot of just their head. A lot of the bird shots in my portfolio came from here.

Here's a few...

A fun and interesting stop in the Upper Keys is the Holiday Isle Resort in Islamorada. There is always something going on there. I would suggest this as a place to stay the night and use as a base for the Upper Keys. There is a long sandbar offshore where the locals beach their boats, helicopter and ultralight flights for fantastic aerial photos of the colorful shallow waters... boat rentals, charter fishing boats, and several very good bars with live music.

These guys are nearby and can be fed by hand...

That's my input for now. Potential attendees, please comment and add to these ideas so that the itinerary can start shaping up.

One of our favorite stops on the way to KW has alsways been Key Deer Refuge. Also a nice spot is Crocodile Lake
05/06/2007 10:28:25 PM · #62
Crocodile Lake is very close to Cardsound bridge where the sunset shot that I posted earlier in this thread was taken. That's a good idea for the Upper Keys since it is between Miami and Key Largo.

I've never stopped in Key Deer Refuge, but I have seen the Key Deer while driving through. They are tiny.

I possibly make this for a the weekend part + 1 day. If the hotel/plane price is right, I'll fly out. I'll have to ask someone for the ride to and from the keys.

Nick

From the people that I have talked to and from what I am seeing in this thread, it looks like October 2 - 9 is a good week to do this.

No excuses, just get your ass down here. I owe you quite a few beers.

Well crap fellas....it might just be a reunion if I take the plunge! Hahaaahaa. That actually might be pretty sweet if we all could get back together for shooting in a completely different location. Huh....will think about it.

Come on, you know you wanna. I don't see how you could pass it up!

If you remember, I have spent tons of time in Florida over the last couple of years, and a good amount in the Keys so I would be a pseudo-local. But more importantly, it could just be a lot of fun. Hmmmmm....

I'm still thinking about Europe first....

You all are making me drool. I wonder if Greg and I could make it? I'll have to do some checking. :-)

I would say you need to enclude this in the Middle Keys part of the trip if you plan on going. It is a good 45-1 hour trip from Key West. So it would end up taking half a day at least.

As for the Key Deer. There are some nice hiking trails on Big Pine Key that you can get real close to them. You need to go first thing in the morning or late in the evening to see them. But other then the Key Deer there really isn't anything else to do around Big Pine Key. You could make this a stop along the way.

Can we start this trip with Everglades or is it too far?

Yes, and it's not too far (sort of). The Everglades is huge. But one of the entrances is near the northern end of the keys and would be an easy side trip.

Just inside the entrance to the Everglades National Park (the entrance that leads to Flamingo) there is a place called The Anhinga Trail that has a super nice boardwalk. On this boardwalk you can see many alligators, water birds, osprey, and many other types of wildlife up close. The animals here are accustomed to people walking on the boardwalk and so they aren't too shy. There are so many alligators that even I wouldn't want to venture off the board walk here.

I've gone when there was so much wildlife to see upon arrival that it took me almost an hour to walk the 50 to 75 yards to the board walk.

Anyway, this would be a good first morning of the GTG. The time to travel from the Anhinga Trail to Key Largo is only about an hour and 15 minutes and there is a lot to see along the way.

Robert,

You've convinced me of this leg of the trip. Now, I just need to get the arrangements all worked out.
