That sounds great. Maybe we can stop there in the second leg.

So, can we do it in October, or what?
04/29/2007 12:33:44 AM · #30
I doubt I'll be there that long. I may be in Ft Lauderdale through Aug or Sept.

Oh, man. If it's in October or later I might be able to come down.

Dates are open for discussion at this point.

Ideas were for late September or early October.

I am open in my schedule so far.

Throw out some dates and lets get them nailed down.

I have a suggestion for a day trip while down at Key West. Metatate did this while he was in the area this year. I plan to be at this place the week of July 4th with son Robert, his family, and "Scoobie the Sailor Dog" aboard his sailboat. There is a "fast cat" excursion that runs out to the fort and a meal is included. Here is a link to some of Metatate 's images from his recent trip there. Fort Jefferson Dry Tortugas
Here's the link to the biz page for the "fast cat" service. Fast Cat Tortugas

We could look at October 2-9. That's close to September. The wife and I are not allowed to take off work anytime in September, so that's our issue. If the larger group wants to shoot for September, we won't be offended. We'd love to join you gus if we can.

when you drive through Cudjoe Key (MM22), be sure to wave "hi" down Jolly Roger Drive. i have spent a lot of time there.

the GTG sounds fun. fantasy fest is october 19-28. it would be expensive, but the photo opportunities would be unlimited. otherwise, i recommend avoiding that time. :)

We need to watch out for the two day sport lobster (crayfish) season. During the week before and until a couple of days after it, there are no rooms anywhere, and service at eating places takes forever. The roads, tourist places and stores are overwhelmed as well.
This woud be around the first week of August. Here is a link. The 2 day sport season is the week before the main season begins.

Monday, October 8 is Columbus Day, which makes a long weekend for anyone who gets that day off like federal gov't employees. Like, um, me. :)

Ohhhhh! Ohhhhhhh! Me too! I'm a federal employee! (Or is that federal property? I get it confused sometimes.)

I can probably work with Oct 2-9. I'll check my schedule tomorrow.

I am going to keep my eye on this possible GTG....I live in Naples, FL and have been to the Florida Keys many times. During Fantasy Fest hotel room rates can triple---if you can even find a room. They are booked in advance...sometimes a year in advance!!

This is a great trip. We have been out there a few times and it is great for photos. I am going to see if I can find some of my old film shots from out there.

Another great place is Fort Zachary Taylor. It is one of my favorite parks in Key West. The beach there is great and the Fort which is right on the ocean is great for sunset pictures. I was married there at sunset so I guess I play favorites. I have plenty of pictures from there. :)

There is a possibility that I may be in the US at this time with work, If so it would be great to join up for maybe a couple of days if that was OK, would be good to meet some fellow dpc'ers

The Ft Taylor idea is a good one, esp if it can be timed so that we can go to the "Southern Most" park for the daily sunset fest afterward.
Tortugas is out of the way, and expensive to get there and back, so Ft Taylor may be a good substitute. There is not much to take pics of while on the way out to Tortugas and back, which is about 6 hours of the day. Tortugas is an exceptional place to go when you have a couple of days or a week on your own boat, but a day trip may not be best for a group of shutterbugs.

I possibly make this for a the weekend part + 1 day. If the hotel/plane price is right, I'll fly out. I'll have to ask someone for the ride to and from the keys.

From the people that I have talked to and from what I am seeing in this thread, it looks like October 2 - 9 is a good week to do this.

The 3 day weekend will help for those who just want to join us for the Key West part of the trip. They can fly right into Key West airport if they want to, or fly into Ft. Lauderdale (6 hours away) or Miami (5 hours away) and take a nice scenic drive to join us in Key West.

Another variation on the time line could be to take one day off the upper or middle keys part of the trip and add it to the lower keys part so that we can spend 3 days in Key West. This way we could explore Key West (one of the largest islands) some more and take advantage of the sunset activities at Mallory Square as well as the excursions that are offered in Key West. These excursions include sailing trips, sunset sailing trips, trolley tours and trips out to Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas.

To expedite getting this organized please commment on the above ideas and keep your additional suggestions coming.

I'll probably be one of the 3-dayers, not sure yet. I always have vacation time, but can't always use it when I want to because of schedules. I'll know more as the time gets closer.

So, I am putting in my time off request tomorrow. Are we gonna loosely settle on these days?

I think we should nail those dates down now. Easier to build a GTG around solid dates. :)

And maybe even day to day schedule. This way I can see if I can make it for at least part of GTG.
