Why the sudden rush of Expert editing? We currently have 3 challenges with Expert editing and one with minimal editing. So you either have photoshop out the ying yang, or no editing at all. Uggg. anyone else wishing for Basic and advanced besides me?

My guess is that landscape expert editing is to try to see how HDRI fits with the expert theme. My guess is this was the original intent for the rule set.

I think its about time the non-paying users got a shot at an expert challenge. Till now all of them have been member only. Share the love. :)

meh. the more sparingly expert and minimal are used, the better.

I've been wondering about something. Are the voters going to be looking for major post processing in the expert editing challenges? What if someone puts in a real nice picture that used only basic editing? Will it get voted down because it doesn't look all worked up?

For instance, I think the Free Study will be to see who can do the best photoshop work. Meanwhile a very good picture, that could win any other challenge, won't even place in the top 50%.

So those of us, like me, with minimal photoshop skills probably won't enter.

It was just an experiemnt those of us that wated onto roll over last week saw (accidently) the landscape III and Hair challenges and rules.

They just havent tried doing that style of editing for an open challenge. So they were just giving it a shot see what happens.

I certainly thought so during the changed challenge, as my score was quite low early on, but the results speak for themselves

in the top 10 there is only 4 that have obviously used expert and only 8 in the top 20. In the bottom 21 there is 10 that have obviously used expert.

So I guess it all comes down to what looks good, & their is no negtive for not using the full extent of expert.

It is my understanding that you are not required to do any editing in any of the challenges, so for the purists, feel free to submit unedited images. If you think they can't compete against the edited eye candy, then that is because voters must prefer the eye candy. If that upsets you, you should probably be suggesting we do away with voters. I might even support that. ;-)

That was slightly tongue in cheek, but in reality we have PLENTY of challenges going on all the time - if none of the challenges during the current week are not to your liking, take a break or better yet, step out of your own editing style and try something different.

I could be wrong, but in the dark recesses of my mind, I recall a time when the forum posts after challenge announcements were along the lines of "isn't this great?!" or "I'm excited about this one!" or generally much more positive things. Again, that could have just been my overactive imagination. :/

I think it's fine to give registered users an expert editing challenge.. but having them *both* expert editing is just too much IMO.

Ugh.

Heh.. There was a lot more of that, for sure.. but at a time when a lot of challenges were fairly new, there were a lot less people on the site, and we weren't being deluged with challenges ;) What your selective memory omits, however, is that we also had bitching and complaining way back when as well. It was just more like...
Well, imagine a small party of 20 people.. where one guy is moping on a couch muttering under his breath. That was before.

Now imagine a 300 person town hall meeting... where people are being how people are at a town hall meeting. That's now ;)

it's really starting to look like DPC is falling towards the Digital Processing side and less about photography. A real shame as I too think that offering only Expert or Minimal editing like this at one time is crap. If it continues I sure won't be renewing my membership here.

i think it's almost about time Langdon put up a vote for members on whether they like/dislike about the minimal and expert editing.

Not missed, just expressed many times in the past - even before expert editing.

As far as polling to keep the new editing rules, I think the poll should be conducted after the voting on the current Free Study. And maybe have a moritoreum on expert and minimum during the last week of this month. That way all things will have played out and it will be a less tainted/biased poll.

And for the same reason the next set of challenges (all in the period of poll) should not be expert.

I'm not against expert or minimal editing. But having only expert and minimal editing (especially when 3 of the 4 challenges are expert editing) is unjustified. If I remeber correctly this is DPC and not DPP. During weeks that they have expert editing and minimal editing challenges they should still keep an advanced editing challenges.

Don't get me wrong. I can see how minimal editing and expert editing play on DPC. Minimal editing evens up the playing field giving those who have no photoshop skills a chance, while expert editing gives those who have mastered the art of photoshop a chance to shine. I'm actually in favor in getting rid of basic editing and just having three levels of editing challenges (minimal, advance, expert) on the premise that there will be one of each every week. Also free study's should always be expert editing.....it's a free study..as in do what you want, show us what you've been working on, etc (and I am in no way close to being an expert...or even good in photoshop). Advanced editing lets you do spot edits and such but doesn't over do it....basic, you can't really do anything anyways besides adjust contrast and brightness and such.

As for registered users getting expert challenges....to be honest I'm starting to question what the difference is between a registered user and a member. The only real difference seems to be that you can enter free study's and sometimes members only challenges.

Okay I know I jumped around alot...so let me summarize:

1) No weeks of only expert, minimal, or expert and minimal only
2) Get rid of basic and just keep minimal, advance, an expert
3) Rigistered users should be limited on what challenges they get (gives the motivation to become members)

My first thoughts when I saw all four challenges with the new rule sets was dissappointment. Okay I know we can enter the Expert editing with little or no editing if we like but that is beside the point, I always thought this was a site that promoted good photography with as little editing as possible. Makes me wonder what we have in store for us this week, and more disconcerting after the fiasco last week with April Fools.
