- why anyone would take a run-of-the-mill image with no special reference to being upside down, rotate it 180º, and submit it to the upside down challenge. Yeah... I know, "It's a camera angle", but does anyone think this is a good approach?

- why some of the authors of images with / of reflections felt the need to rotate them 180º. Fear of being voted down if they didn't? I think it worked for the best in one case, but most of these images seemed to be hedge bets.

- why this challenge brought out the Pee Wee Herman fetish in two of our number.

- why the sideways bird and landscape were submitted. Good images, both, but too easy to see the criticisms coming.

- why I can't keep my mouth shut.

Just a guess, but maybe it got to midnight Sunday and these were the best shots they had.

The great thing about this challenge site is that it forces you to take a picture in the week. There are too many competitions where all it requires is looking back over your past "x" years of photos to find one that exactly matches the subject.

That is sometimes going to mean a choice between posting "off-topic" and not posting. On a leearning site like this, I'd rather post and be told what I'm doing wrong than not post and never know.

Exactly my attitude, but it seems that most people don't want to tell me what my shot is doing wrong this week :o/

Yeah this bothered me as well and I made that comment on a couple of them.

Well all the bland rotated photos and even the shots with absolutely nothing upside down in them beat me out. I was the bottom of the barrel with my shot.

I wasn't expecting much from my first shot, technically it was a difficult shot to take. I needed a camera with a super macro lens. I tried macro and it didnt work so I went with the maxed out zoom and had to crop the end result. I tried and tried to recapture the effect of the shot under controlled circumstances and I was not even close to be able to get the results that I did when I took the original shots. To me I think the image in the drop of water was clear enough to understand what it was, that is why I wanted the background to be completely out of focus.

Oh well not to worry I will be whooping ass this week with my Games shot.

I'm actually dissapointed that I submitted this week. I knew I didn't have a good shot and I didn't care much for the topic, but I gave into the addiction and submitted anyway. Coming off of an "okay" showing in the last challenge, I should have quit while I was ahead.

So, I guess to answer the question in the first post, I think at least for some people it's the addiction and the need to get a shot posted no matter if it's good or not.

I didn't submit a photo this week. I just wasn't happy with what I did. I ALWAYS have my best idea on Sunday night:( I will post this week:)

I must agree on the upside down photos. Most were just a flip of the photo:(

I didn't submit either. My criteria for submitting a photo is that it fits the challenge and that I am proud of the photo without thinking about the challenge. (It helps me ignore how badly I do in the rankings.) I had a bunch of ideas for Games, and even borrowed props from people, but I didn't get a single good photo when I was done. :-(

In my case, I might submit a photo I'm less than completely happy with because I tried something in the photo to see if it works. In that case, I'm submitting the photo in hopes of getting comments on whatever it was I experimented with.

I don't understand all this incredible self doubt on a learning site.

If you are capable of acheiving perfection or close to it why would this site even attract you? If perfection in your mind was acheivable at your command you would probably be competing at some of the professional photographer sites with the big hitters who have no learning to do other than the limits of their already enviable skill..

I see some great talent here and even when some of these folks don't score as well as their best I still see interesting stuff.

You do yourself and the other folks here a disservice by ctiqueing yourself so harshly you don't submit some ideas you had that week.

Remember, your ego is the only thing at stake here. No money or nothing. Just shoot it and submit it :-)

I... I must be blind in one eye and can't see out of the other but why did my photo, no. 67, do worse than a bunch of out-of-focus, rotated and lousy composition "photos"? Am I missing something here?????

heheh...you are not seriously expecting to make sense from an art judging contest that is open to every person to judge from a 5 year old kindergardner to 60 year old graphics professionals to angst ridden teenagers to middle aged frustrated art critics...;-)

You ARE an optimist!!

I, for one, thought your photo was a nice photo. You set your shot up well, and the image was certainly better than average technically.

My main issues with the photo was that the subject was not especially compelling, and that that I thought it felt contrived.

I ended up giving your photo a 5 or a 6, which is about average for me. The same photo in the upcoming challenge, on the other hand, I probably would have given an 8.

I thought it a 10 myself. GOOD JOB!!!!!

I gave it a 7 myself. I think you should have placed much higher. Then again, who am I to judge? I can't seem to do any better than an average of 4 myself. It is very difficult sometimes to not get discouraged.

I can't remember what score I gave you (in the middle somewhere). My only "problem" was a logical one; unlike in "The Thinker," I would expect your (older) model to be a reader and able to notice the "problem."

As one of the offenders who submitted a boring, rotated, uninteresting photo, allow me to state my case.

I have been painfully busy lately, and have not had time to really develop good photos for the challenges. I was not even going to submit one for the upside down challnge, but I happened to be setting up some shots for my kid in the park - I knew he would be swinging on that swing, so I shot a few to test the lighting & comp. When I got home and looked at those test shots, I found something vaguely interesting about the form and shape of the tire swing, particularly when rotated. Now mind you, I knew it was still a crappy shot - overexposed, not ideally composed and a really boring subject - but I went ahead and submitted anyway. I also hated the stupid title I slapped on it, but never got around to going back and changing it.

So, I got pretty much what I expected and deserved. I'm just surprised it even rated as high as it did.

btw irae, loved your photo...

While technically your picture was pleasing, rotating the magazine was no more creative than just rotating the photo itself, or the camera. This level of focus and clarity is to be expected with indoor staged shots. My out of focus, yet action shot, got a lot of comments on how people understood it was going to be slightly blurred just because the object was moving so fast. Plus, going out and finding something unique helps get creativity points.

Could it be the hairy legs or maybe there was a question about whether it was taken during the week of the challenge? :>)
05/20/2002 03:20:09 PM · #22
Come to think of it, that could apply to my own submission.
05/20/2002 04:09:48 PM · #23
ok, i admit it, those are my legs ...

seriously, i dont really care where i rate in the rankings, but i did think it was amusing that my pic ended up 98th : ) . .

i mean, i knew it was totally a grab shot, but it *was* pretty funny, the cat spreading her furry legs in pefect parallel to the legs on the magazine cover next to her.

so why did it do sooo bad? maybe there are not many cat lovers on here?

I don't get a LOT of the placement. I'm not talking about my own picture here -- I actually expected it to do much worse than it did (I have the feeling I have an admin note and some forum posts to thank for that). But there are pics that, in my opinion, ended up ranking WAY lower than they deserved and others that ranked WAY too high. (And in some cases the distinction may not be as extreme but every bit as valid.)

It all makes me wonder about my own "qualifications" to vote after seeing the way things ranked in relation to my own votes.
05/20/2002 04:35:17 PM · #25
You can't judge your own qualifications by the vote in this forum... The voter base is way too diverse for that.
