Why is this whole freaking site in LOVE with INSANELY IMPOSSIBLE SHARPNESS that isn't even possible to get with the kinds of cameras some people have [such as myself]
& it's like, why can't you ignore the fact that some things are a little bit fuzzy & actually look at the ACTUAL FREAKING PICTURE. i mean, i took an insanely good picture for Chains. i mean i think it was the best i've done on this site so far- no joke.
& i have a freakin 4.7 now. i mean, i honestly think this whole obsession with sharpness needs to stop. people who are just starting photography with their freaking family camera that didn't cost like $800 dollars because they can't AFFORD something that expensive. so get OVER this stupid obsession. not every freaking picture can be perfectly sharp and when there's a really good picture that has some slight blurring... DEAL WITH IT! look at the picture itself and now the stupid fuzzy edges.
i mean... i did something really good in my mind [and my family's mind for that matter] & i have a low score! it's not fair AT ALL.

plus. stop giving FOURS to people unless there's actually SOMETHING WRONG with the picture. if its an average picture - not good, not bad but nothings WRONG with it - give it a 5. if theres actually something bad about it [besides slight blurring.. stop being gay about that] than give it a 4.
ugh. seriously
this whole sharpness thing is overrated.

Elyssa,

Unfortunately we don't have control over the voters. The hardest part is to separate ourselves from our images so the comments/scores aren't taken so personally.

Once the challenge is over, why not post your image for more constructive comments.

Until then just chill. DPC isn't the be all and end all of photography. It's just one outlet.

;o)

hmm...I resent this remark. I haven't looked at the entries for this challenge yet, so cannot even try and guess which is yours. But I do resent being lump-sum insulted. Are you a voter? Are you including yourself?

She is a voter and her average vote cast is 4.7878 ...

first off-- this was just a rant. sorry for the insult.

& about the stupid comment.
i wasn't trying to include everyone.
but yes i was including myself

because i can be completely stupid too.
but about the average 4.7 thing, i've been trying to bring that up. in the past few challenges i think i've given only... lets see... 10 fours... and thats the lowest i've done.
i've REALIZED how stupid i can be. but i wasn't aware of this stupidity when i first started so i just voted low because i could.
get of my back people,
this is a RANT.
im ALOUD to say what i want.

& thanks guys for the nice comments =]

Sure you can say what you want. But do you really want to insult everyone who reads the thread?

i didn't think i was insulting everyone.

i was writing that towards the people who know they do what i explained.
the whole obsession with sharpness. im sorry if i insulted you, but not everyone is trying to make personal attacks at people [& not me for that matter]

but whatever.
sorry for "insulting you"

btw.
i deleted that part of it.
geez

I wish you well in the competition, but I can't help but wonder what you would be like if something really important happened to you...

While I can appreciate this is indeed a rant, you truly need to step back, take a deep breath and not begrudge those who can afford those big expensive cameras you allude to, nor cast aspersions on the mental acuity of the general membership.

You may also wish to visit some of the photos taken by this young photographer Joey Lawrence who managed some absolutely stunning images with lower end equipment.

If the scores bother you that much, you might consider turning them off for the duration of the challenge.

Just a thought,

Ray

to ray:
i'm kind of offended by that first comment you made.
am i not allowed to be angry & rant about something? or should my anger only come out when something "important" happens to me? I'm only human, my friend, i can't help that i get angry.

but other than that your comment was helpful.
although Joey Lawrence's cameras are better than mine, so that isn't so helpful.

But anyways, i'd appreciate it if you didn't make comments like the first one. my anger & how much of it comes out for certain things shouldn't be commented on.

sharpness can be achieved using any piece of equipment not just $1000+ camera and lenses. Besides that, if youre going for a soft focus on purpose fine, but other than that everything should be "insanely sharp". When I look at a photo and it is supposed to be sharp, but the edges are not, its immediately tainted. You can use software to help.

As for voting, in my mind if your image is blurry you are lucky to get a 4.7 average. When I vote softness gets you an immediate low score. I don't want to just ignore it and look at the whole picture because the whole picture is soft when it shouldn't be. It screams either lack of technical proficiency or laziness to me. If your photo is soft, make an adjustment and shoot it again and get it sharp. Don't settle.

i feel like i'm replying to everyones... but here it is; again [to Jmnuggy]

now, i used a tripod & i edited my photo for like three hours & i retook my photo like five times
i dont know what else i could do to make it sharper.
because with my camera, i think everything comes out a little fuzzy.
& i dunno. i just think people shouldn't compare every photograph to those amazing ones that are taken by people who have probably gone to school for photography.

He didn't always have the camera he uses today.

You should really look at THIS page and the number of ribbons, above 7.x scoring shots, editing steps of some of those photos that were all taken with the same camera you have.

Okay, I went onto the chains challenge and looked at the pictures. They are all increadably well done. To say that you don't have the expensive equipment that others do is just a moot point. We have no way of seeing what type of camera was used until after the voting period so every image is looked at on the same slate. I do agree that if they vote below a five they should leave constructive comments to help you get better. We are here after all to learn and to share.

When you post your anger in a public forum and direct it at the community you should be prepared for backlash and comments ...

Take a second to look at Joey's portfolio and open some of his images ... you'll see that they weren't all taken with a 5D ... he was winning ribbons way before he got that camera ... he won a few with a 1.3 mp Olympus ...

Joey's earlier efforts (and ribbons) were achieved with cameras far below the capabilities of yours, and a Nikon 4500 is certainly capable of producing a sharp image. Maybe you used a shutter speed too slow for the lighting conditions without a solid tripod, shot too close without using macro mode, or inadvertently focused on something in the foreground or background?

Regardless, sharpness alone wouldn't account for a 4.7 score anyway... choice of subject, color, composition, and the challenge topic itself are usually contributing factors in below-average scores. You could always ask for opinions after the challenge is over to see how much of a role sharpness played.

Huh. now THATS helpful.
i guess i just need to learn how to do that.

I've got some pretty sharp stuff with a 5400, just one generation later than your camera. Before that, I got some pretty sharp stuff with a 2500, which is a 2mp with no manual settings. Your camera is plenty good enough.
04/09/2007 02:22:30 PM · #19
Sharpness can be achieved on even low end cameras. Rather then get upset about voters not enjoying fuzzy images, why not ask for some tips on improving sharpness with what you have? Then this could be constructive.

I do commend you for taking on the insurmountable task of trying to get the world to lower their standards for what they consider to be a good photograph though. Good luck with that! If you can get them to accept fuzzy images, can you work on poor composition next? That would help me out! :)

My suggestion would be to step away from DPC for a while, and just take pictures for yourself. Work on composition. Really get to know your camera. Play around with some different editing styles. Do it for yourself, not what the voters want.

I know what you’re saying about the voters. I’ve learned that if you want to make them happy you need to conform to what they want. Sometimes a little blur can really enhance the picture. Other times it just looks like camera shake. Generally anything outside the box will get voted down. That’s the nature of the beast. There are pro photographers out there making good money, but would never win a ribbon on this site. So I understand where your rant is coming from. Again, take some time a way from DPC and shoot for yourself.

You said you used a tripod and reshot to attempt sharpness. What was the aperature and shutter speed? Was the subject moving?

Another thing to remember is that a tripod is no good unless you use either a shutter release cable or the timer.

I would like to help if I can, but I would need ot know your settings.

04/09/2007 02:54:39 PM · #25
The point raised by the OP is valid - it is something I notice a lot in challenges. If its not tack sharp then the majority of folks will vote it down. There is a difference in soft focus and out of focus.Motion blur can add a lot to a photo.I would not (as mentioned here) vote a picture down just because it is not sharp.

Open your eyes, open your mind
