OK - There seemed to be some interest for an Ohio GTG. I have never been to a DPC GTG let alone planned one. I know there are alot of people within a couple hours of each other. I am not overly familiar with locations outside of the Columbus area. My suggestions here would be the Columbus Zoo, the Franklin Conservatory (Chihuli and butterfly exhibits going on right now) or the Ohio State Fair this summer. This thread is open for suggestions and to let others know who is interested. Let us know what is in your area and we can work from there.

And on a side note, I am often at different Metro parks and a variety of other places during the week with my kids, often taking pics. If anyone is interested in joining us for a weekday mini-GTG or some late night shooting after my kids go to bed let me know.

Update : The Ohio GTG will be at Hocking Hills on Saturday June 16th. The specific time and tour is yet to be decided but we will be having a potluck lunch to save time and money. Please either post in this thread or send me a PM to let me know if you are coming and what you are bringing for the potluck. I will keep this list updated as people respond. I am looking forward to meeting as many DPCers as possible. This should be a good time.

I'm not familiar w/ the Columbus area ... but if the dates work out for me, I'm willing to make the drive ... all of those suggestions sound like great photo opportunities ... any weekend after May 5/6 work for me ...

German Village is a good place to go to find some interesting settings, or dawn/dusk shots of the skyline over the Scioto. [Edit to remove a comment I made that could potentially link the OP or someone else in this thread to a current challenge submission.]

I lived in Columbus for a couple of years in the early-mid '90s and I took fewer photographs during that time than any other period in my life. I do have nice pics from the zoo, but then again they're just zoo amimal pics. Nice place to live, but scenery-challenged.

I make it back to Ohio once or twice a year (grew up in Cincy, wife's family in Toledo, friends throughout) so if I happen to be there when this GTG happens it might be fun to join you and see the city again.

German Village is Awesome. My buddy that lives down there though said it has turned to quite not the best area. But there are still some great spots there. I like Columbus or Dayton area, lots to shoot. And lots of zoo's or museums.

We went to Hocking Hills for the first time last summer. The place is awesome and would be ideal for a GTG. My kids got wiped out pretty quick though. We dont have any family here in Ohio so we are hoping we can find some friends to take them for the day.

From our trip there.

I have been down to German Village a couple of times but never with the intention or eye to take photographs. If the weather perks up a bit I might head down there Sunday night to shoot for teh night challenge.

Oh man, I am going to be in Athens the weekend of May 18-20 with nothing to do on Saturday the 19th during the day. If you guys decided to arrange a GTG at Hocking Hills that day I would absolutely join you.

Beautiful photos, BTW.

Check back here later Tim, I will post some more pics of my trip down there. I went in the winter 2 years ago, everything was ice. My wife and I brought a rope and had to use it, to get up and down stairs. We were the only crazy people to do it and be there. Young and dumb I guess.

This sounds cool and I'd be interested. If you guys could keep it in the central part of Ohio and on a weekend that would be awesome. I live in NW Ohio so the Columbus area is about 2 hours away. My brother and my SIL both live there so I can leave the family to visit and do my camera thing.

I'm actually NOT interested in going to the zoo because I can go to the zoo in Toledo really any time. I personally am interested in nature shots but I cannot remember what parks were down in that area. (I lived in Canal Winchester in the early 90's)

IF there were to be a GTG in Cincy - I'd LOVE to do that as well since I grew up there.

Please keep me posted!

I forgot to add, if any people might be interested in some kind of Lake Erie GTG, let me know. I am looking for some good places along the lake to take pics.

Creature - had to comment on this because sounds like we were running the same path almost. I grew up in Cincy, lived in Columbus from '93-'95, and married someone from NEAR Toledo. Just struck me as funny!

I second hocking hills.
There are also some nice places along the north coast.

How about MLK and St. Clair area in Cleveland? ;)

There is nothing nice about Cleveland, the city, the teams, the lake, it all sucks there. Cleveland just needs to fall into Lake Erie and take the Browns, Cavs, and Indians with it!!

For photographers, you can't beat Hocking Hills. Went there this past Tuesday when it was in the seventies. Left Wednesday when it was in the thirties. The leaves aren't out yet so the sun was bright at times. So I waited for the sun to hide behind the clouds and I used a polarizer to lengthen the shutter speed for the waterfalls.

From Tuesday:

Tim

PS: Next time we head to the Columbus Zoo, I'll drop you a PM to see if you want to meet up.

Now, now...be nice. My son and daughter-in-law live in Cleveland so there is something nice to be said about it. ;)
Actually, they love the area. The metro-parks are awesome. The market has a lot of photo opportunities and then there's the lake front....and I love to do the pub-crawl when I visit. All those neat little bars all in a row and old-fashioned bowling machines. Makes for fun times.

I'd be interested. Columbus is only 3 hours from here, so count me in if it's a good date!

I'd also be interested in a get together, probably early May or early June would be best for me.

HERE is my Hocking Hills gallery from a few years ago.

I know there is also a hot air balloon festival, usually in July, in Middletown. I also have a gallery there from that.

Further south, the riverfront along Cincinnati is fairly photogenic. There are also some Amish areas that offer some nice photography and I have yet to explore.

Middletown, eh? My wife winds up out there quite regularly for work! I guess I'll have to tag along if she's going out there during the time of the festival!

Sorry bud, been a long time Browns fan. It hurts. Plus I had a friend that was recently robbed up by the Agora theater in Cleveland. But yes by the lake front, where the stadium and Rock n Roll hall of fame are, there are some great spots, I will give you that.

P.S. Beautiful shots atupdate and jpochard.

That is funny -- I don't suppose you went to O.U., too? hehe

I just hired a person onto my development team. After chatting her up during lunch one day, it turns out she ran a parallel path to my wife, and just down the road from each other -- they both moved to Toledo when they were 4, grew up in the same part of town (South Toledo / Maumee), graduated in '87 (neighboring high schools), and then moved away. Even funnier is she looks just like one of my wife's best friends from then.

That's a pretty ignorant thing to say especially when you consider that you live in Akron.
Talk about an armpit.
You obviously aren't very familiar with Cleveland as St. Clair and MLK would be an opportunity for some, how shall we say, gang photojournalism?

ETA:
Just saw your reply after I posted.
Sorry to hear your buddy's misfortune.

I live in Cincy and would be open to a gtg. A Saturday would be the only day through the week I could do it. Columbus, Dayton or Cincy would be fine for me.

At least if there were 10 of us that gtg in Cleveland, anyone who tried to rob 10 people with cameras would be pretty stupid, so no worries there. Here is one of my fav pics of cleveland....
