When using a 580EX as master, and a 430EX as slave, will flash exposure bracketing (FEB) set on the 580 adjust the flash strength on the 430?
The 580 has a FEB control, the 430 does not. It would seem to me, though, that setting FEB on the master would be able to execute FEB on the 430 as slave.

I had some time to do some testing. Here are the results for those of you who are interested.
The 580EX as master CAN cause the 430EX as slave to execute flash bracketing.
I set the 580EX on my camera bracket and placed the tripod about six ft. from the subject. I placed the 430EX just inches from the subject. I set the master:slave ratio to 1:8 so that the 430EX (the slave) would contribute almost all of the light. I pointed the 580EX behind me and away from the subject (but tested to insure it was communicating with the slave). I set the 580EX to FEB with 3 stops. I took three photos giving the flash time to recycle between each. It was VERY obvious that the 430EX executed with three different strengths.
Rock on wee strobes!

yep ... good info
i'm actually a big fan of the EOS flash system, i know not everyone agrees ... but i like it
i must admit though, i've had some problems with certain people and the pre-flash ... it causes them to blink, which causes the image to be taken when their eyes are 1/2 closed ... that part pisses me off

| My biggest beef with the 580 flashes is that they will not fire reliably. Usually putting in fresh batteries fixes the problem, but I'm not well organised enough to have lots of fresh batteries on hand every time I want to use the flashes. I think an indicator to show low battery would be a major improvement. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with them. |

I'm using 2500's... I change them just before cutting the cake or bouquet toss, etc, so that I am sure to have fresh batteries. But yeah, some kind of indicator would be good.

Thanks for the info Santa. Very cool experimenting! I just have to get another Canon flash and I'll give it a try.
I agree with the others about the battery meter, you'd think the 580 would have one. I highly recommend, if it's in the budget, a Quantum Turbo battery. I think it only works for the 580 in the Canon line-up, but you never have to change batteries in the middle of an event. You still need the AA's in the flash, those work the brains of the flash and the Quantum bypasses all that for the faster recycle times.

fresh batteries
I would reccomend 2500 Powerex brand batteries and chargers - they are honestly better batteries. I would LOVE to have an indicator on the flash though. I discover that my batteries are dead by the resulting photos... and have to run through a few diagnostics to be sure that is the case - what a drag!

I don't think that is a fair statement. Anything that runs on batteries stops running when the batteries die... that is reliably true.

Yes, Kevin, you have FEB.
While we are complaining though... I absolutely LOATHE the battery compartment door on the 580. You have to nearly break the thing open. The 430 door is better. |

isn't the Nikon flash system better since the camera's have internal controls for them? and therefore contrary to Canon, it is possible to have 3wireless flashes at once!

The way around this that I use (my daughter can be absolutely relied upon to blink in reaction to the pre-flash) is to use the FEL button first and then wait for the subject(s) to recover. Not so good, though, for grab shots.
