I'd LOVE to shoot images like these above, without any cropping or other post shoot editing to alter the composition, so framed like this in the camera, and am wondering what (Canon?) lens would be the best to achieve this with?

Your advice would be really appreciated ...

Thanks

This lens should be able to handle it.

Thanks, yep, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM has caught my eye, as has the 100mm Macro - but to be honest I don't know why I'd choose one over the other? (other than price) any pointers?

The 100mm lens will give you an effective length of 160mm, the 60mm will give you an effective length of 96mm. This means you can be further away from the subject and still get the same magnification. Also, the 100mm lens is an EF lens, not an EF-S. This means that it can be used on any Canon body (with an EF mount that is). The EF-S lens cannot be used with the 10D, 5D, or 1D series cameras. It will work on your 350D, so you should be ok with the 60mm unless you plan on upgrading to one of those at some point in the future. However, EF-S lenses will work with the 300D, 350D, 400D, 20D, and 30D cameras. So if one of those is in your future, you'll be fine too.

You've given examples of flowers, only. If that's all you plan to shoot the 60mm would be my choice. It's easier to hand hold and distance from the subject isn't as much of an issue. If you plan to shoot bugs on flowers, the 100mm would probably be a better choice. They're both very sharp.

At this point its flowers I'm planning on shooting mainly. Good to hear they're both sharp as thats really important for these shots I'm planning. Cheers

I have the 100mm and love it, one of the best purchases I ever made. The extra distance in focal length comes in very handy particularly when I am using artificial light, I can be further away from the subject and not have to worry about flare problems, etc. I also use the lens for a lot of close up portraiture, the 100mm giving me a bit more space there also, I don't have to be in the subjects face. I highly recommend the 100mm macro, it's about $100 more than the 60mm, and you already have the 50mm 1.8. I say go for the 100mm...you'll love it.
