Canon has released their RAW Codec for Windows Vista.

The codec supports .CR2 RAW files, but not the .CRW files, and includes support for the following cameras. Note, my listing may not be 100% accurate. Please check the Canon web site for exact models.

• EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
• EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi
• EOS 5D
• EOS 20D
• EOS 30D
• EOS-1D Mark II
• EOS-1D Mark II N
• EOS-1Ds Mark II

I think this link will get you started:

//www.usa.canon.com/opd/controller?act=OPDSupportVistaAct

Choose: Cameras > EOS (SLR) Camera Systems > {choose your model} > click "Submit"

On the resulting pop-up window, click on the "Drivers/Software" link at the top of the page. In the resulting list, there should be an item named, "Canon RAW Codec 1.0 for Windows Vista". Check the radio button next to it and follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to download it.

So would this enable windows to show thumbnails / previews of RAW files in the same way it currently does with jpgs?

I went to the website and looked up my camera, an old EOS Digital Rebel. The result is an emphatic statement "Your camera is not compatible with Windows Vista." So I guess I get to choose between buying a new computer with Windows Vista, which won't work with my camera, or buying a new camera. Not a difficult choice!!

(Lest someone take me seriously, I should point out that it's only the EOS Utility that's not compatible with Windows Vista. I personally never use that anyway! And there's no .CRW codec, but while it's convenient to see thumbnails and previews in Windows, I don't find it essential. I'm more concerned about the software updates needed to move to Vista. For example, I use Photoshop Elements 3, but the Vista update is only available for Elements 5.)
