Maybe something is wrong. Not even the Far Side got this many, and 100 more views in the last couple of hours? And it doesn't roll till the 28th?!

Of course, mine doesn't show nude horses, but what a difference. And Brad with 30 comments, I would love even just half that many. Although 6 is the highest number of comments I have received so far. So thank you to everyone commenting.

No nekkid horses, I'm thinkin' it's something subliminal! Dang, wish I could do that on porpoise. Since it's Langdon's b'day, maybe he finagled the stats to play with us?

In my view a score of 5.5 is in the mid "F" evaluative level. That is NOT good.

Not suggesting that DPCers generally rate images in the relative order they deserve, they usually do, but they just give pathetic ovarall ratings to ALL images. That is the way it has been since the site started. As long as DPCers chose to rate images the same as everyone else, scores will continue to be low.

I don't see how you can compair the scores here to evaluative levels, it takes a lot more than just one photo to make an evaluation, and you can't go by someones average either, as they will improve over time, and then you are judging them on the past, not present. I left school at 14, back in the sixties, with no qualifications, the only qualification I have is a full driving license, I love taking photos, and this is a good place to show them, and pick up some tips and ideas, and to see what others are doing, this is a great fun site, it's about helping each other to improve, not telling them how bad they are, good luck.
Happy birthday Langy.

Me too Greetmir. I think there are some substantial differences in how educational establishments have scored work in different parts of the world. I'm British and the system when I was at school was A = 75 % and above B=60-75% and C=45-60% and anything below a C was considered a fail. Teachers marked very tough and B and C were very common marks to attain. A B was always considered a very good mark. A was if you were exceptional. I'm not sure how they do it now, but 20+ yrs ago, that's how it was.

I think there are definitely differences across the various countries and this trickles down into DPC voting.

Well ... I come from Canada and they used the entire scale ... not just A B C and F ... but A B C D E F and at both ends the extremeties of A++ and F-- :)

I understand now though, that many are using the 1 to 5 scale and other ones now.

Some don't even GRADE now at younger ages because they say it adds a "stigma" to the child's mentality. Well ... that is probably why I used to get job applications from high school graduates that could not spell at a grade 5 or 6 level sometimes.

Oh don't get me wrong, they used the whole scale in the UK too, just D E and F were all considered a fail.

Yep, my experiences echo salmiakki's - to get an A was a real cause for celebration as it meant that in the teacher's view the essay or whatever could not be improved upon, and thus a rare occurance.

When i was in school (over 15 years ago) to get an A you had to get 95% or better. a B was 89%-94% and F was below 70%.

Right or wrong, I'm influenced by the American k-12 educational system because I've worked with grade reporting in hundreds of school districts all over the USA. With very, very few exceptions they set the 70-80 percentile as 'average' or "C" level accomplishment.

This is an international web site with different countries, like Belgium and the UK, represented which have different norms and therefore influence voters from those countries differently.

But with all due respect to Greetmir and salmiakki, whose influences are different, most DPCers that submit and vote are Americans where the 70th percentile is considered 'average'. Therefore, the percentile average scores they normally get from DPC essentially tells Americans their photography is subpar.

It is interesting to me that I tend to vote the 'good' images higher than the group, but vote the 'bad' images lower. Thank goodness there are not a lot of really 'bad' images. Ironically, I probably score 90% or more of image submissions higher than my own get from the group.

But I feel most submissions to DPC are above average photographs and deserve better scores than they get. Therefore, I intend to keep doing what I'm doing. :)

Mine has varied less that 1/10th point since about vote 25.

No comment from Langdon but did get a comment from my son. The interesting thing about that is he did not know it was mine and there is no way he (nor anyone else for that matter) could have known just based on the image itself. He did not know I had a current submission and I have not submitted much recently.

He introduced me to DPC but has only commented on 56 total images according his latest stats. (I've made almost 3,000)

There must be some sort of father/son psychic connection at work here. :)

It made my day.
