I have read about this game on the paper a couple times. The first time it was about a Far East student who was getting deported for making too much money on a student visa. She made over a million pounds sterling on this game selling virtual clothes I believe. A couple of days ago I read some more about how the game is becoming so intertwined with real life and now I'm very curious about it.

I'm not much of a gamer, I only play the odd game here and there but I'm intrigued by this virtual world. Anyone here play it?

I have heard of it and I looked into it. I like playing the Sims but I am not up for purchasing virtual things. I think my money is better spent on real things. Here are the stats they have up on there web site right now.

Total Residents: 4,691,635
Logged In Last 60 Days: 1,639,252
Online Now: 34,908
US$ Spent Last 24h: $1,570,935
LindeX Activity Last 24h: $221,685

Over 1 million dollars spent in the game in the last 24 hours.

CRAZY that people would spend money on it. (thats my opinion at least)

Its always sounded like a dangerously addictive thing, you sure you've got enough spare time to devote to it? :)

It's strange you mention it. I just set up an account last night and have been busy customising my avatar.

To be honest, it's all a bit sad. A bit like the rest of the Internet.

Apart from DPC. Of course...

P.S. You can setup an account for free, and the download is about 30Mb.

I signed up today but I can't quite figure out what to do. I mean, do I just fly/walk around all day? How do I get a home, get a job, make friends, etc? It's not very intuitive.

Yea, it sounds like we're at about the same stage. i.e. What's the point?

Funny coincidence - I just looked up this game today on the net because I'd heard about it enough times. So I did the free sign up and downloaded the software, but it won't run - some sort of .dll error. Oh well, I'm sure I have better things to do anyway. :)

I was pretty excited about the name I picked, though, "Dutchess Voom" - which had me laughing so hard... I chose it for no real reason, and thought it would be fun for people to see me as something so totally out of character. :) Ah, well... Maybe I should change my name at DPC to Dutchess Voom, lol...

edited for spelling, probably need to edit more...

Well, I "played" some more last night and I don't really see what all the hype is about. I see it as nothing more than a fancy 3D chat *shrug*.

My name is Gwyn Soderstrom LOL

Everything you can imagine doing in RL (and even some you cant) you can do on SL. You can design and sell clothing in your own stores. You can create and sell skins/hair/furniture/houses etc etc. You can own and operate casinos or clubs or even private investigation agencies. You can be a pole dancer or an escort and work that angle too. There are photography studios, mostly N30 and photosphere, where you can run your own SL photography studio and charge people for profile pics. There are modeling agencies for avi's that people use in their SL magazines or to help sell their products. Do a search for secondlife on flickr to see some of the stuff people are doing. The world is vast and caters to almost every possible interest. There are virtual copies of films and tv shows where you can play the character and 'live' in that world. Bands play live events, such as U2. There are even SL lawyers out there.

That all sounds cool.......if only I could figure out how to do any of it! All I can do is walk, fly and teleport, not much else. I see people dancing but I dont know how, I see people laying down but I dont know how. Same for kissing, making out, etc. HELP!

If people are dancing in a club then they are likely dancing on what is called a 'dance ball'. It's usually something spinning in the room. You right click on it to bring up a menu and hit touch or animate, depending on the ball. If nothing else, ask the people who are dancing how to do it. Laying down, kissing, hugging etc are animations and are bought in stores. Another thing you can create and sell if that is where your talent lies. Some places have pose balls - pink for girls and blue for boys usually - and you right click and sit or use for it to animate your avi. Be careful, some pose balls can be sexual in nature.

Hehe.....discovered the last balls by chance ;)

Maybe you should adopt my avatar and teach her the ways of the (second) world ;)

I'm out of work, so this looks like a good use of my time. ;) June, I said that you referred me. I guess if I ever get so addicted that I have to join, you get 2000 linden-somethings. ;) My name is Annae Saenz or something like that. :) I'm still downloading it though, so I have no earthly idea what's up at this point.

Okay, I just came back from another stint in SL... And I think the trick is to befriend someone who knows what they're doing.

I played it for a while - for free. First it was interesting and I was curious to see different things. A few people showed me where to get free stuff. I got lost a bunch of times, or trapped under water, which was a real trip.

Eventually, I lost interest. I think it's mainly a big social club and meat market. However, quite virtual, so it's not all that fascinating to me. Also it takes TONS of your time. But definitely worth checking out, at least.
