After discovering that my D200 had a fault I had to take it back to the shop I got it from and explain the problem. I also took my 80-400VR with me because that was lens that seemed to be causing the issue. After checking the lens on another body we found that the D200 itself had a problem and I decided there and then to have it repaired by Nikon UK under warranty.

I seldom shoot with the 80-400VR and asked how much I could trade it in for and if they had any nice wide zooms...

At no extra cost to me, direct exchange I traded my trusty unused 80-400VR for a used Nikkor AF-s17-35mm f2.8 optically in perfect condition (few body scars nothing serious) beautiful hard case with it.

Also into the bargain they lent me a Nikon D1X while my D200 was being fixed.. ALL for free.. That's not bad service I guess, I cannot wait to get that lens on my D200 but for now I will be shooting with it tomorrow on the D1X and/or my wifes D50.

I always use my Sigma 18-50 f2.8 just lately but found it a bit soft at the open end but I really like that range. I also have the Sigma 28-70DG f2.8 and that is a bit sharper at f2.8 but NOTHING AT ALL as sharp as this baby.. It's AMAZING!!!

Just wanted to share my glee! with people who understand my happy feeling.

Great stuff. I'd love to see some samples and I bet there are a few others that would too... specifically to see what you are referring to with the softness in the Sigma lenses at f/2.8 compared to the lack of softness on the 17-35...

Nice when you get a lens that really can handle itself... I'm pretty badly jaded with my 80-200 f/2.8L which is pretty much insanely sharp through the entire frame, right to the corners at any aperture... Puts my 50mm f/1.8 to shame even at its sweet spot...

That sounds like a pretty wild deal. That 80-400 is a pretty big peice of glass! I've shot with it a bit... You'll probably be glad of the 17-35, although you might miss the reach a bit...

Sounds like a good deal Marac. i hope you're happy with the 17-35, I've used it once and loved it. I have to admit that I'm really saving for the 17-55 and a 70-200. one will be used for weddings, the other will be used for sports. But, if you really want to get rid of the Sigma 18-50, I'll be happy to take it off your hands. :)

Aparently the contact points for the lens had been damaged by my trying several older Ai type lenses on my body at a camera fair, one was rather tight to fit and even though I never forced it on I think THAT was the reason for the damage, however I am still unsure of what EXACTLY it was because Im still waiting for it to be repaired by Nikon UK and be returned.

As far as those interested in the lens compared to the sigma softness please wait a few days because I wont really have a chance to test the 2 lenses together for a while... but trust me, there is a LOT of difference in the 2.

I think the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is a GREAT lens as is my 28-70 f2.8 but I find I need to use USM(unsharp mask) in photoshop to get the sharpness into it, but with the Nikon 17-35 f2.8 it was totally sharp straight from camera.. I can post a resized only shot later tonight from the Nikon but you will have to wait for a sigma shot (Ive lent the lens to a friend for a wedding shoot...

I was out today shooting with the 17-35 on a D1X body the shop has lent me.. Im about to upload them but to be honest they didn't look so good from the cameras monitor panel, the first shots with my wifes D50 were WAY better but we shall see.. may be just a dull monitor on such an old camera.

yeah it's a great lens ... my favorite I think. the 17-55 was nice when my employer had one for me to use ... but nothin wrong with the 17-35...it's a staple.

can't wait to get it on my D200 when it's fixed... SOB SOB .. I miss my Baby
