Photo Friends co-ordination will be passed on to another DPC member, but only if there is continued interest in this program. I know there are a few I haven't "matched" up. If you are still interested, please post your interest here. If the reaction to this post isn't enough to continue the program, it dies here.
A personal and heartfelt thanks to all those that have enthusistically participated. I really appreciate it.
Thank you.

What is the Photo Friends program?
11/17/2003 01:15:37 PM · #3
Photo Friends started out under the title of DPC Mentoring. Where one person volunteers to help another with one on one assistance to another that wants more individualized help in improving their photography. It changed names to be more "user friendly", as most of the relationships developed into two-way help and naturally friendships developed from the close inter-action.
For this to work, it needs quite a bit of participation. Ideally, that participation should be voluntary. Due to a lack of interest, the program has faltered and will no longer be offered. Sorry.

If this post gets enough responses, a new co-ordinator will step forward. If not, it dies here.

Swash - I think the problem is highlighted by coolhar and darcy - just a lack of awareness. Even a small turnover of matches makes it worthwhile, I think..

It'd be nice if there was some (if small) support from DPC..

Does that mean you're volunteering? Because that's what we're all doing.

Maybe instead of an actual coordinator you can just do it through a specified thread; people offering to mentor say so there, and maybe add what they feel comfortable helpting with. Those who want help can PM them. All of our profiles are available here anyway ....

Put a long explanatory post at the beginning -- see John's recent thread for the Critique Club.

I've volunteered my time, but I have much less available...something had to go. I've advertised this as much as I thought people could swallow, but still the participation was fairly low. I think Paul's idea of self service matching up is a GREAT one. I won't be involved per reasons stated above.
It's never been an officially sanctioned site activity, just my little way of helping. Check the threads. The word has been out there on numberous occations.
As for the need for larger numbers of participation...so many factors need to be considered, such as hardware, personal tastes, location and personal strengths/weaknesses. W/O a pool of participants, it would be of a case of "sticking" two people together, rather than an attempt at "matching" two people with ANY common ground.
I tried, succeeded is some small ways, but alas, time is not on my side.

I have a volunteer to "take over" co-ordination, but understandibly, without the participation to go with it, it's a test of patience that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Perhaps I will try to convince my volunteer co-ordinator to try Paul's idea of attempting to keep a running thread going, with self service matching. The biggest issue I see with that idea, is "How does a 'leader' say...I've got enough 'followers'!!!" I'd be pretty hesitant to volunteer as a leader, knowing what I know now.

I'd love to be able to say I have the time..

Not sure what you mean there.. I wasn't suggesting the site council should be putting in more effort or anything along those lines. Far from it. I was just thinking of a link in the menu or something like that. I appreciate the effort of everyone involved in DPC.

The most useful matches might be via same/similar camera e.g., people using Canon G1, G2 or G3. Just a thought. I'm learning a lot from our local club as well.
