Im thinking about buying the 5d, so I borrowed a friends 20d so I could get used to Canon controls(Im currently Nikon) but I noticed the viewfinders display(light meter and all) is really dim hard to read. Does any one know if the 20d and 5d are similar, or does the 5d happen to be alot brighter?

I can't remember if the controls look different. But the first time I looked through a 5D I thought, holy cow, this things brighter! Then I tried to convince myself that I was imagining things ... that they had to be the same. But, in fact, the 5D lets in more light. It has a bigger mirror, bigger view finder, it's just brighter. I loved it from the first moment I looked through it. (in part, because I was so thoroughly accustomed to the 20D and the 300D before it)

Dim & hard to read doesn't sound like normal behavior. I don't have relevant experience with the 20D, but I can tell you that I have no problem with readability of the 5D's in-finder data display. Best thing is probably for you to visit a retailer and check it out.

I agree. My wife has the 5d and i try like hell not to use it because it makes my (very nice) 30d seem so dim.

alos i had the 10d before this and both the 10d and my 30d are easy enough to read and work great.

Well I have checked out the 5d in a store, but my problem lies while out in the sun. It might also possibly the fact that I use glasses? My eye doesnt cover up all the light that may leak into the viewfinder? Do any of you use glasses?

i do but i also use a viewfinder extneder that helps me get a little closer. i will say that things are better when i wear my contacts though.

I wear glasses when I shoot with my 5D. The only problem I have is the camera pushes my glasses up against my face and smears them. I have to clean them all the time. I used the eyecup attachment with my 10D, but that only helped to keep my nose off the back of the camera. The camera still pushed my glasses up against my face. The eyecup also decreases the viewfinder coverage because it magnifies the viewfinder. I don't know about the 20D, but the viewfinder in my 5D is much brighter than my 10D was.

I wear glasses and use the 5D - I second Mick's complaint of smeared glasses! I am not sure how this is avoided, or how it could be different between Canon and Nikon. You could set the dioptre adjustment so that shooting without glasses is clear, but with the obvious issue of constantly taking your glasses off to shoot.
