What is that? RAW knowledge needed here!

Hi folks, I shot this last friday with my D70s in RAW+Jpeg mode. There's a sequence of about 5 or 6 shots (same subject, same light) that show white pixels surrounded by darker ones around them. There all in rows.

They show up on my NEF (RAW) pictures but not on the Jpeg wich kinda reassures me that it's not my sensor that went bananas. I tought it was a glitch that happened during the transfer but then I opened them up in CS directly from my compact flash card and they still show up in NEF.

Also the skin tones appear to be gridded wich I've never seen before. Anybody knows what happened? Or has someone else ever exprerienced the same thing?

And they don't appear in Picture Project... I guess it's CS that has trouble with them?

I have no idea about the black/white pixels but the grid look very much like unconverted RAW.

hey,

it's been less than 12 hours since your first post, allowing for time differences, perhaps not everyone has been online and had a chance to view the forums. so patience is the key! :)

i use raw 98% of the time and i've never seen this. so i honestly don't know what the problem is. perhaps it's a conversion error, or it's some kind of corruption which may be a problem with your sd card.

you need to eliminate possibilities. try opening the file in other software and see if the same thing happens. if it does, you can rule out software error and start going back further.

give it some time and someone will stop by and help you out. just be patient and allow for the sun to move further around the planet and wake everyone up! :)

I guess you have to determine if this is constant (with every RAW image) or occassional, and what conditions make it arise. In any event, if it happens more than once, it would seem you need to take it in for service. This is not a good thing, and to me it indicates an obvious problem.

From the regular lines the 'dots' are in, I would suspect card corruption before anything else.

Shoot the card full of a similarly toned subject and look for the same effect. If it appears, reformat and repeat. If that doesn't get rid of the dots, repeat with a different card. If that does get rid of the dots, toss the first card. :D If it doesn't, it's something other than the card.

Make sure cables (between card reader and computer) are secure, as well.

I didn't comment on this when I first saw it 'cuz I have no clue. But based on what he said in his first post, it happened on a group of 5-6 images but not to others on the same card. I assume from the first post he is shooting RAW+jpg because he said it shows on the RAW but not on the jpg, yet what he has posted here IS a jpg, presumably made from the RAW.

So if all THAT is true, it would seem it's not an issue with the card. Beyond that, I have no clue.

I just read a document provided by Nikon Canada about "Banding". I had never heard of it before and I think that may be the case with the image posted earlier?

Any toughts?
