The WPL is an acronym for "The World Photography League".

Why would it be integrated? Is that in the before threads? My real question, I guess is why is this an issue?

It was integrated into the DPC culture several seasons back by Scott's persistence in making it work the way he wanted it to. The site taking over the management is only a bit more than an official recognition of how much it as been integrated into DPC already. The 'before thread' that was mentioned in the post above yours is a mistype I believe and should have directed attention to the post above his, not to another thread.

There is no issue that I've seen mentioned with the WPL being officially integrated into the site (which is a testament to Scott's hard work, as most everything is contested hotly around here) -- the integration is due to Scott no longer being willing/able to continue devoting the time and effort required to keep it running. The reasons for this he outlines in a previous thread (here).

Hope that answers your questions.

Well, I do not like it, but that's just my personal biased opinion. I have no formal objections apart from simply not liking it -so ignore that-. But basically I do not like any teamplay, because I do not trust teams. Be it football or photography contests.

One of the reasons for "integrating it into the DPC site) is so that we can automate certain safeguards to ensure that the existence of teams has little impact on the challenges themselves, other than a lot of people trying harder to submit pictures which will score well with the DPC-electorate.

I don't think it's giving away a big secret to say we're concerned with and taking measures to prevent any kind of illegal voting, by teams or otherwise.

WPL functions primarily as a "statistical overlay" on the DPC challenge results, much as professional sports "fantasy leagues" operate, except that we are also the players amassing the statistics. Except for the recomputation of the stats, all this does is make team members more committed to submitting a quality entry -- and isn't that the bottom-line goal of this site? (Oops -- that discussion's in another thread)

Brave person! I don't like it, either. And I feel about as verbose as you do on the topic, so 'nuf said.

Wow...I have been out of the loop for a while. I get e-mails from Scott, but had no idea this had gotten this far with DPC. Pretty cool to be a part of that. Oh and this was the first thread I stated about the WPL for people who want to see how it was started.

WPL Beginnings

I also want to just say that without Scott my fleeting idea would have been just that and it would not be what it is today without him...your a good man Scott.

Quick queston about WPL 4 this week. Does the trees challenge count towards any scores or is it always just the Member and the two exclusives?

Always just the 3 regularly-scheduled, weekly challenges: no free studies or extra challenges count for WPL at this time. They used to, but it gave too many options to paid members vs registered members, since some weeks had a free study plus an irregular extra challenge offering 4 entries to paid vs only 1 for regular.

Clint, don't sell yourself short. You did not only come up with the idea you and I tried to get the WPL off the ground ourselves. You offered great ideas and invested time and money into it as well. I also can say that without you it would not be where it is today. I take no more credit for the WPL than you should.

Thanks for being their to answer question and trying to do as much as possible to make the WPL a reality. I think the WPL has grown to a point where it would be missed if it was not around. Also it has helped countless photographers that participated strive to enter more challenges, be more active at DPC, and become better photographers. It allowed the great photographers to mentor users that needed it. Not only was the WPL a fun competition site, it IS a learning concept.

I thank D&L and DPChallenge for taking the WPL seriously and wanting to introduce it in the frame work of DPC. They have been kind enough to allow me to add my input because I have communicated with hundreds of users in over a thousand email in the last year. Those communications allowed me adjust the WPL to make it what the participates wanted it to be. And I know that D&L along with the SC and DPChallenge will make the WPL a fun addition to this great community. And Clint, you and I will know that your idea along with our work in some way made a great site even better.

I'm proud of that and you should be too. Cheers Clint, here's to your great idea and behind the scenes help.

I don't quite follow Bear_Music's Ladder idea for a future version of WPL. In that realm are there still specific sized Teams that users assemble with a Team Captain?

The team spirit idea is on of the valuable current assets for the whole WPL idea. I do agree that there could be more teams. Sometimes going against a team of top-notch players is good, it just makes the underdogs work harder. While top-notch teams may slack off on occasion.

Some would like the competive field more equall and some accept the greater competition.

It's not a "ladder" strictly speaking. It's called "divisional play". Teams are formed as currently, but there's no cap on how many teams can compete. Divisions are ranked A, B, C, D, etc, and consist of 8 teams per division. For the initial season, teams are "seeded" into divisions based on past WPL performance, team averages, or some other criterion.

From that point on, a "season" consists of 7 weeks, and each team plays each other team in their division once per season. At the end of each season, teams are ranked in their division based on won/lost records, and the top 2 teams in each division move UP to the next higher division for the next season, while the bottom 2 teams move DOWN a division, and the middle 4 teams stay put. In division A, the top division or "champions" division, the top 6 teams stay put and the bottom 2 move down.

End result is that new teams enter in the bottom divisions and work their way up the divisions over a number of seasons until, if they perform strongly enough, they make it into the top division and compete head-to-head against the "best teams".

In practical terms, every team will eventually stabilize in a division that reflects its skill level, and will be competing only against teams of comparable skill levels. It's very workable IF you accept the idea that it takes time and effort to claw your way to the top.

Look into the English football league, I believe this is the type of system that Bear_Music is basing his thoughts off.

Hey Scott,

First of all, thank you for continuing with the WPL4 season. Also thanks are in order for DPC (Langdon and crew) for taking WPL under its wing for future seasons.

I know you have been working feverishly to get the stats updated, but just wanted to give you some feedback on the current stats and standings.

My last week's (Week 1) score is not posted on the WPL site at all. If you go to "Dodge and Burn" tab on the WPL site, I have 0 points.

On another topic, with respect to the "Standings" tab, I am curious as to why is it showing us (Team Dodge and Burn) at 0-1, when last week we were 1-0? I don't see how that is possible, unless there is a glitch in the system (or if we actually didn't win last week).

Thanks!

Thanks for your input. Give me a few minutes to check it out. Yes there are still a few bugs but I will get them fixed. I will post back here when I find and fix the problem.
Thanks,
Scott

Found the problem and fixed it. Your score should be be updated within your team. The next time the MVP standings are updated it will be listed their as well.

Thanks and let me know if you see any more issues.
Scott W.

ETA: as far as your team being 0-1 that is the correct standings.
