Let them create titles in their own tongue.

They already can - although expect plenty of 'huh? (1)' votes. I had enough problems with a half Italian, half French title...

Use the Babelfish Translator.

Urm - maybe not :)

Cappuccino Crème Brûlée becomes:

Burned Cream-coloured Cappuccino

While literally accurate, it isn't much use.

Unfortunately AltaVista's Babelfish isn't quite as good as HHGTTG's. Even a short sentence comes out quite poorly with Babelfish.

To hell with the huh's and 1's... (I have developed antibodies). I'm sure you can appreciate both a lil mystery and a linguistic challenge.

That's fine. Have them look up the proper English spelling of their title somewhere before posting or post a title in their own language.

I'm driven nuts by this, too, and I'm rather ashamed to admit that I'm now officially guilty of it! I have slapped myself around quite a bit as a result, and I'm getting rather sore.

As the details were Take a picture with a suitable title that is also a title of a book there can be no excuses in the current challenge.

I'm all for anything that furthers the confusion in the mind of the typical voter. It might cause some of them to engage their brain.

Spelt and misspelt are perfectly valid in British English, just like spilt, learnt, leant, and burnt.

On the topic at hand, I think it's disgusting that people can't bother to spell their titles correctly. The ones that are obvious English-language difficulties I can forgive, but the ones that are just laziness are awful. This challenge is full of photos that don't fit the challenge at all: photos of story contents, not interpretations of titles. Entrants who didn't bother to take a simple second glance at their title before hitting submit are just making it worse.

Yeah, but he's from Michigan! Heehee, just kidding, I thought it was kinda ironic...

I'd agree though that it's pretty annoying to see incorrect spellings--it makes me think the photographer doesn't really care about his/her picture, so why should I? (regardless of wether this is true or not, it's how I view it)

Misspelt has always been fine in the schools I've gone to. And I just checked Webster's dictionary. Perfectly acceptable. So there. ;oP (besides, it's not the TITLE of my entry!!!!)

Google.com tells me: "Did you mean: Misspelled?"
m-w.com doesn't have it (weird that your dictionary does and the website doesn't)
dictionary.com *does* offer it as a valid spelling though.

Now I'm really interested in finding out why it's accepted differently across the country (I was always taught misspelled)
Oh well, you say tomato... =)

Canceled or Cancelled?
That's another one that usually throws people off. (both are valid)

In my mind, not having time to look up the correct spelling of a title is akin to hanging a photo on a gallery wall with a nail and saying that you didn't have time to matt or frame it. It really has nothing to do with thinking highly of yourself, it has to do with how much you care about how your work comes across.

Yes, I agree. And we're back on topic...
