So many threads about people leaving,or even not joining DPC due to editing restrictions - I want to see what percentage want and don't want them changed. Eg //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=54584

By lifting I don't mean on ALL challenges, but at least 50% of them be made 'open' challenges where Dodge & Burn, Cloning & Spot Editing et al are allowed. This isn't a vote for cutting and pasting 3D images into photographs, or doing multiple image merges. Just for some basic editing allowed.

After all, if enough people seem to want them lifted, then admin may take note, if not then this argument is dead once and for all.

Hey perhaps they will even create a nice poll.

Enter you thoughts here, a simple YES if your for lifting the rules a touch in the future.

Or a NO if your against it and think DPC is fine as it is.

Yes... I like to see SOME open chalanges.

Yep
11/12/2003 10:23:52 AM · #8
i would want to have a little more control over the images, even if spot editing was still not allowed.. mainly layers

however - the challenge of taking a great photo solely with the camera is inspiring to make better work of the camera. you always have the option to touch a photo after the fact.

i wont vote, because i could vote either way - indifferent in a sense i guess.

I agree which is why I said 50% of the challenges. I would like to see a nice balance between editing and non editing challenges. That way everyone is happy.

Absolutely NOT!
Not to say that the occasional (EG: Halloween) challenge isn't a nice change of pace!!!

That's why I started the Editing and Non-Editing Challenges thread last week.

however - with a 50/50 mix, i think the rules would get blurred
and there would many spot edited images in challenegs where it wasnt allowed.

I'd love to see open challenges aimed at good photography.

Its a shame that it has never been attempted here.

Given how you've phrased the question. I vote no

I would like the option if it is only used for clean-up. For example (as I showed before) the removal of an unsightly crane in the background...

from to

But I wouldn't like it used for extensive editing or in such a way as to compromise the subject of the photo such as was done in Pedro's Halloween photo: . (Not a criticism, the photo was great and had it's place in that challenge, but I wouldn't like to see such editing as routine practice for a photography contest. It belongs more in a photoshop contest.

I dare you to tell me WHY you don't want spot editing! Or are you afraid you'll become better than yourself?

I used to think like this but in the past couple months I have totally changed my mind as I have seen the benifits of using layers, dodge and burn and of course spot editing which is really necessary on most photos. I think that we should be allowed the use of layers, dodge and burn, and spot editing on all challenges. entries won't become too digital artsy. i think the fact is that most people against this are the ones who are truly scared for some reason and are way too focused on the idea of being beat in a challenge instead of focusing on being able to improve your photos with the use of these techniques. ultimately it's up to drew and langdon, but i think it may be time for another vote, because i think allowing these changes is where the site is heading anyway.

and I vote yes to editing changes even if the language hasn't been fully worked out. I think people need to understand the intent behind the idea first.

A very contradicting post Gordon?

i'm for editing as well. i don't see why people think that editing means the end of photography. i think it is pretty obvious when a picture has been altered drastically. for the most part i think it would improve the overall photogrphy on the site, and for those that go overboard with it, if you don't like it don't vote it high.

ultimately, the trends in scoring will determine how drastic people will allow the editing. if highly altered pictures keep getting hammered with low scores people will stop entering them.

once again i'm for it, but obviously there's some wording to work out.

I don't think so. I've rambled on at length on several occasions about why this has nothing to do with tools.

Though largely I've come to the conclusion its a lost cause here.

Yes, I would like to see the same rule as Digital Photo Contest - that is to allow spot editing, etc. as long as the photo still looks natural.

The way I understand it, the reason behind starting this site was to improve peoples photography! This does NOT mean MAKING PERFECT IMAGES, rather IMHO it means TAKE THE BEST PHOTOGRAPH POSSIBLE AND IMPROVE UPON YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS

Look at all the top 10 photos from all the challenges...how many of those shots are PERFECT? None are TOTALLY perfect...does that make them have less of an impact? Not in my humble opinion. I see a shot that was taken by another human being that appreciates the art of photography enough to try!

When I see an imperfect but none the less awesome shot, I see the chance that I can take a photograph like that myself, if I perservere. If I see the top XX (pick a number) shots that are perfect and my shot isn't, I may believe that I can not achieve that myself and quit. Please realize that when I say "I", I mean myself and others that perhaps don't read the forums, or for whatever reason don't believe (because they are beginers maybe?) that they will be taken seriously if they do not produce PERFECT IMAGES.

Why do we have to achieve perfection and who ever said that art has to be perfect?

PS. My sig does say my photos, not my created images....

Yes, but it would be better to do this with a PHP vote so it's automatically kept track of....
11/12/2003 11:45:52 AM · #24
I think that something needs to be made absolutely clear before putting this issue to the vote. That is that the rules will state that any editing has to be for the purposes of making the image look natural. In the same way that people who do not stick to the challenge topic get voted low, this will also happen with people who abuse the relaxation of editing rules. As I have shown in some of my challenge entries, this would be an improvement over the current system where it is possible to produce highly artificial looking pictures with much editing.
THIS HAS TO BE MADE CLEAR SO PEOPLE WON'T BE SCARED OFF BY THIS ISSUE!

I'd also like to add that the standard of so called real photography would shoot up as top-notch photographers who have left because of the draconian editing restrictions would come back. Many very fine photographers who do not use Photoshop to make digital art have left us because of this issue. Let's get them back.
