I am still trying to figure out where the hell it states that you have to have "school" in the entries. You gotta love the 'experts' around here. Read the street photography thread..the same crap is going on there as well.

I think part of it has to do with the challenge, they're called 'School Days: Music' and 'School Days: Biology'. Description for each challenge is "N/A". How else should people perceive it? BTW - prior challenges of a similar nature shouldn't have any bearing on how people vote the current one IMO. Many of them are unique, as these two are when comparisons are made (description vs no description).

Man the last 20 or so votes have been brutal. It's gone from a 6.48 down to this in that span.

People PLEASE say which one you're in when posting scores: Music or Biology.

Seems to me that those posting scores for Biology are doing a WHOLE lot better than those posting Music scores... There have got to be some really high music scores out there, because there are some really good images in that challenge. But it would seem the upbeat folk in Biology are posting, while the downbeat folk in Music are posting.

Mine too, first time I have gone under 7.0 since the first day of voting. (not that I am complaining, I have a great score)

I should feel good that my bio score has held steady then...

I thought my Music score was going to top 6.0 but it hit some rough parts of the score this weekend and tumbled back to 5.7 area. We need to ritard this..

That just depends....is the picture what the photographer remembers or interprets as schooldays or yours. I do not beleive that the challenge description states a specific requirement such as having a "school" or "music" setting. My memories of school and music have nothing to do with band. That's is just my take on this FWIW.

While it is true we all have different memories, would this challenge not be different if the "School Days" part were left out of the title and the challenges were simply titled "Music" and "Biology"? Surely these titles would bring forth a different set of photos, no?

It's been mentioned multiple times that there was no expectation in the challenge of involving school in the shot. It's merely a cute way of naming a challenge with subjects we find in school. Look at the winners of Chemistry and Physics. (Was it physics, I forget...)

am I missing something? when you click on the name of the challenge, no where does it say "school days" is just a part of a cute way to name it. seems to be that "school days" is a part of the challenge.

I guess thats one thing that always has mad me nuts about the challenges. This sort of loose interpretation of challenges, and how far away from the description of the challenge people go when taking a photo.

Well kudos to all that tried to meet the challenge as described, and low scores to those who didnt even try...

Finally, if the only reason your photo has anything to do with the challenge is because you gave it a title that meets that challenge, shame shame on you.

It was chemistry and geometry.

And while it was mentioned in the forums that it didn't necessarily have to deal with school, there was no challenge description, just the title. Many people do not read the forums so they just had the title to go on.

was it a site admin or site council that posted?

they sure would make things easier if they posted those types of things in the challenge description... thanks!

I think too many of us forget that the majority of people who enter and vote on challenges do not patrol the forums 80 times a day. You are quite right in that there is no description saying "school days" wasn't part of the challenge. I'd probably have to go back to the last set of these challenges to find the posts.

That being said, I did enter a "school" shot. At least by title. It's doing quite well. I never underestimate DPC finickiness.

I haven't gotten a comment from posthumous in the last challenge and I still haven't gotten one now... I must be doing something terribly wrong!

oh, but prior challenges do have a bearing...

when i looked through what was entered and how they fared in the prior 'school days' challenges, the majority of the high placers (especially in geometry) had nothing to do with school. my impression was that this would be free study of either biology or music--and there was nothing to indicate otherwise. but, alas, the voters (moreso than the forum participants) have spoken.

i'm willing to bet that if i had titled mine differently, the score would be a lot higher--that was my second mistake.

Of interest, I did review the School Days: Chemistry challenge School Days: Chemistry before working on my Music challenge entry and noticed that the top 10 entries were all directly related to a school setting. With that, I set off to make a School/ Music entry as much as possible related to 'school'.

When I reviewed the Geometry challenge results this morning School Days: Geometry, the entries were clearly less directly related to "school". I guess I should have looked at both challenges prior to putting my entry in.

I have found something similar with this week's challenge: the Biology entries show many many 'Strongly Connected to School/School Environment/Studying" shots, while the music images have far less of that genre... I suppose one is more naturally aligned with a learning environment than the other?

My point (poorly made) was that the older 'School' challenges had a decent description that accompanied them. This gave those more leeway IMO when it came to viewer/voter perceptions of what met the challenge. With the current running 'School' challenges there isn't anything other than a challenge title - narrows it substantially in what many may consider 'acceptable' this time around.

Normally a challenge without a description would be more open (more like a free study). If the challenge title said 'Biology' with no description, it would be quite open. Add a description and it narrows. In this case, IMO, by not having a description, and by having 'School Days' preceed the subject in the challenge title, 'School Days' becomes a quantifier. A challenge description here could have opened it up by confusing everyone. :P

As for prior challenges having a bearing on voting, it really shouldn't (nor does it IMO). The bearing is more on the submitters to use any similar challenges that have run previously, as a guide to what the voters at that time were influenced by.

Where do you see "School" in these entries (which came in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th)?

In fact, only 2nd and 7th place really show "School"

Climbing slow and steady - I like it. Won't be a personal best, but looks like it will end up being a personal second-best.

These entries clearly show lab demonstrations that are the hallmark of Chemistry class -These are used in Chemistry/Physics demonstrations in schools all the time.

Test tubes are the standard school chemistry lab equipment

A bit of a stretch

Test tubes and sintilatin vials are used for chem labs in school all the time

Thin film experiments to show refraction of light is a very typical lab demo

Wow, even at this last phase of voting my score is teetering ...1 vote takes it up a tenth, then 4 votes later it drops a tenth. So it's been going all week. Well for us down South it's 10.25pm and just about bedtime. In the morning this will all be over. Hopefully will wake up in the top 20, but very much doubting it now :-( Good luck School Days Musicers...
