He left a comment on mine - it was short and 'sweet'

''I LOVE IT''

Knowing what an effort it can be,sometimes, to vote and comment I am very grateful for ANY comments I get.

I, for one, think dertyklobb should be commended. He made the effort to comment on a good number of photos (whether or not you like your comment is really not the point) and after getting trashed in not one, but two different threads, still managed a civil reply. There is an apparent lack of emotional maturity and tact here but I don't think it's on the part of dertyklobb.

Well said - I quite agree.

There is actually a whole sub-culture of people online that purposefully capitalise or not certain words, such as 'i', their username, or My, His, Her, etc. Of course some people are just lazy. But on the opposite scale, we have some excited people who like to add several additional and unnecessary !!!!! or ????? as well. Each to their own, 'i' guess.[/quote]

thank goodness i don't know any of those!!!!!!

I just found my comment from him. No I didn't check it off as being helpful. His comment to me appears to be one that is coming from someone who has a chip on his shoulder and he is out to upset and offend others.

Well you left me a reasonable comment - certainly more reasoned than a number I've recieved for Still Life. What's more impressive is that without a single photograph hosted here, two people have chosen you as a favourite photographer. VERY cool.

At this point I’ll take a “yuck”, I’ve only got 2 comments after 86 votes. I am so disappointed.:)

I find it a comfort to know that one can leave DPC for six months and upon return not have missed a thing. It all starts up right where it was left off. The only thing that suprises me about this thread is that nobody has made a run for the popcorn, hotdogs, and beer yet...

Now I'm hungry! Thanks a bunch. Sigh now I got to go to the kitchen and see what is there.

well in the end the guy is a genious. Gruff - Yes. But well worth listening to and I'm glad for the original rant as it called attention to a fellow we should really appreciate having here. (If our egos can take it)

I wanted to personally and publically say (sheepishly) sorry. And I thank him for his time, obvious effort, and I hope to see many more of his comments tearing apart my work.

Thank you dertyklobb and sorry for being so easily bruised.

I've just been reading through some of the comments dertyklobb has posted in the Still Life challenge, and I find a lot of constructive advice there. Sure some comments are hard and direct but isn't that what we all want. Not always back patting and saying how good a photo is all the time, right? I also think he has done well, and the amount of comments he has made in just one or two days since he joined is very commendable.

I agree, he does make numerous valid (and at times very helpful) points.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I went back to read his comments and I ended up reading through ALL of them because they were in fact the MOST helpful comments I think I've read here on DPC and now I'm just sad that you people have scared him away from commenting on more photos.

Dertyklobb, I think you have an excellent way with words and more often than not your are trying to be inspirational in a forceful way similiar to the treatment people would get at art and photography schools. I also agree with nearly all the comments you made. I would be very pleased to receive comments from you on my photos. Stick around, you're helping a lot of people out, and submit some of your own stuff too.

Was this on your Still Life or a current challenge? I only ask because I'm trying to see how his comment on your Still Life comes across as being "out to upset and offend" - he seems to have done the same as with a lot of other comments he's made, namely telling you what he likes and dislikes about your image, why, and how it could be made better to his eyes.

Like JasonPR, I hope we don't scare him off - I don't necessarily agree with his comments but it's refreshing that somebody actually feels able to state so bluntly how he feels photos could be improved. That's actually all I want from comments - single lines of "good job" may give me a warm feeling but they don't give me much else.

I also received a comment from dertyklobb on my "Still Life" picture:

"eBay is on a different server; try auctioning your action figures off there."

I greatly appreciate any comment that is constructive. Even if they are insulting, they help me look at my pictures through other people's eyes. The problem is, I can't tell if this is one of those or insulting or humorous. I guess in a way it is constructive (telling me I shouldn't have entered it in the challenge).

Maybe I'll just take it that way.

I just read through a handful of this 'troll's comments.

I'd say they were about some of the most insightful, on topic and accurate critiques I've seen here for a while
11/12/2003 09:31:18 AM · #94
I don't care if my pics get bombed with criticism as long as the criticism has value to me. If someone gets a tad "harsh" and overly direct and to the point, so what...
My photography is not tied to my ego. Even if my pic gets trashed and I don't agree (with the critical points), still...so what... You can't please everyone and trying to will just make you nuts.
There is a difference between critisizing your photo and critisizng YOU as a person. You need to be able to tell the difference....

i find it really amusing that the british guy from american idol (simon) gets praised and loved for his rude comments toward the singers on the show, and dertyklobb gets hammered here for comments that for the most part aren't nearly as harsh as simon's.

he's the simon of dpc, and i think it's great.

oops --hit the wrong button.

Sweet Sin- I don't find his comments on your photo to be rude or a guy with a chip on his shoulder at all. He probably gave you one of the best comments ever and he also told you that even though he didn't like your choice of flower it wasn't you and then proceeded to give you great commentary on your shot.

I agree! Stop being so hard on the folks who leave comments or we won't be getting any at all.

In defense of JC, Ken and the few others who started in at the top of these threads, they didn't have the luxury of seeing the 140-whatever comments he made, most of which I agree were very helpful, and a lot more thoughtful than the norm. They each had one of the few really crappy comments he left. Its easy, all you guys standing up and saying how great he is, when you got nice comments like "Awesome" (Konador) and "I LOVE IT" (Chinstrap). When all you have to go on is "Yuck", well, he's going to look like a jerk.

Hopefully, Derty (if that is, in fact, your real name) will stick around. Maybe he'll even learn a little tact, maybe not. One thing I know: it would be a real hoot to lock he and ZuesZen in a thread and let them go at it! :)

after reading through most of the comments left by derty...I would love him to comment on my stuff. He has a very critical eye ("speaks" like a harsh professor) and expresses it. That is what people always ask for, now you have it.
Keep it up, and hope that others will learn from what he has to offer. Talks with an understanding that sounds like it comes from experience.
