Now I see, I did get one from him, and it was right on target and helpful. I'm not so sure this is a troll after all.
128 comments require a bit of effort on his part.

whatever you consider a "troll" to be, i'm not that. glad to help. 128 comments took a long, long time. :-)

Mmm... He hasn't left any comments on my Still Life shot yet. Dertyklobb do I have any chances to get one, or you have already commented on all the shots you wanted to? Anyway, I am awaiting your first DPC entry impatiently, I am courios about your photography after all your constructive and destructive comments. :-)

i think this is a bit of a different situation, konador, where the comments dertyklobb was leaving are a little more unconventional than most of what's typically left here in the comments field.

i don't think this example serves to justify leaving anonymous 1's all that well. i mean, if you don't want to leave a reason behind with your 1, that's your call and your right. i think from now on, when i leave a 1 i will leave a comment like, i had to give this a 1 because blah blah blah.

i'm looking forward to the possibility of sometime getting a comment from the klobber. his bold honesty and conviction are welcome by me!

For what it's worth, his comment on my (pretty terrible) photo was helpful (and ticked as such). Ok, so maybe I was one of the lucky ones to get more than a single word, but he said what he liked about the photo, what he didn't like, and what he would to do make it better.

You can't ask for more than that from a commenter, whether or not you agree with him.

Not so idiotic scoring perhaps - but check out the top comment on my shadows entry!

My shot was never going to do well and I'm not at all bothered, but it makes me wonder what the guy intended me to feel?...

I did actually find it funny though. ; )

If you participate on this site you put yourself open for comments. And not everybody wants to use the diplomatic type of comments but just write straight what they are thinking.

If you participate you should also be prepared to accept that and try to interpret the comment positively yourself. Look at his original comment, it sounds harsh, but it also tells you :
* that you have achieved the brochure look you were after, well done.
* that he personnally does not like that. O.k. that is his taste, his right to use that in voting.
He left a good comment on mine, tellings something about how he saw the picture and something about the feelings it created with him. Perfect.

Accept it, learn from it, move on.

Willem: well said!

And there are lots of pictures in the Still Life that could use a little harsh criticism. It's not to be taken too personally though, it's meant to get you further. And as Willem said, even the "brochure comment" wasn't as "stupid" as that if you analyze it correctly.
11/11/2003 08:10:46 AM · #33
I enjoy and take to heart 99% of all comments. The ones that bother me are the ones that just give me their three part score as a photo professor would and offer NO real comments. I must be in the right frame of mind to really comment and try to comment on both good and not so good photos. Still life was tough and the number of photos discouraged me from make comments. It was all I could do to vote for them all.

Well I guess I did the summoning. I thought his comments suggested either theft of the Idea, or Theft of the actual photo. Peaved me.

Then the jerk goes back to my photo and leaves me the most thought provoking comment I've EVER recieved.

mmmm.... I have to think about this.

I guess it's good (and healthy) for sites like DPC to have such "trouble makers" from time to time! :o) Stirs up discussion and energizes people. And the guy isn't just a troll as we found out.
11/11/2003 08:16:47 AM · #36
This guy left a comment on my photo... it was very respectful, he said what he liked about the picture. He then says what he didn't like and what he would have done to fix it. I don't agree with him on this part, but his comment is one of the most helpful I have received on my still life shot.
Perhaps when he becomes a bit more diplomatic with shots he doesn't like he can become a valued member of the community. I do believe it's possible to leave a comment with opinions about everything you believe is wrong with it without being harsh. In fact, people are more likely to be receptive and willing to listen if your constructive criticism is diplomatic. Hang on... I should take my advice more often!!

maybe his commentary is his art...rather than photography. He has obviously made an impact and made people think and created a ripple. I think its rather amusing to watch it all unfold.

His comment on my still life was "Weird, wild stuff." I'll take that as a complement. :-)

I guess my entry isn't that great. All I received from him was, 'great pic.'

I'd rather have his comments than some of the ones I actually receive. What do people think is constructive by saying "This picture doesn't move me," or other comments in that ilk. It doesn't say a word to help or correct the situation in future photos. Maybe a reason why it doesn't appeal to the person would help.

I got: "I hate these kinds of photos". Actually so do I. I marked it as helpful. Thanks.

Maybe you could at least exercise the use of the shift key for the beginning of a sentence and the use of the word I. That would be a good start. LOL Seroiusly, around here telling someone something is pathetic isn't being constructive. Try something like, "I don't like the way you have done this, I think you could improve greatly on the image by doing this or that."

Well i got a comment by the infamous 'dertyklobb' too , for the still life.
"Great lighting; bad subject. "
Well i guess thats not bad - its true anyways i did use a bad subject.
This guy is just giving us his opinion.
Thats cool - everyone has a right to say what they want - but they should also understand that what ever they say should not affect others in bad way.
Some of you guys seem really pissed with the dude, but we should not resort to calling him names - he never said anything bad about us - just the pictures.
And i do give him credit for this :-
Comments made:
Made: 141
Helpful: 49
Profile Viewed: 259 times
And this guy joined on Nov 10, 2003.
Wow this dudes got a loooooootttt of patience to view all those pics - thats probably one of the resons he made such comments - poor fellow must have been so tired , probably devoloped carpel tunnel along the way too.
Anyhoo - criticism is criticism - good or bad - it will just make us want to do beter next time, now wont it?
cheers all !

There is actually a whole sub-culture of people online that purposefully capitalise or not certain words, such as 'i', their username, or My, His, Her, etc. Of course some people are just lazy. But on the opposite scale, we have some excited people who like to add several additional and unnecessary !!!!! or ????? as well. Each to their own, 'i' guess.

Well, I would like to welcome you as well, but also to point out the utter practicality of couching your feelings and criticisms in terms people are willing to hear instead of reacting to emotionally. The content of you comments need not change one iota, but the effectiveness can be the polar opposite of what you've achieved in at least some cases.

Expressing your criticism in terms to which the photographer will react negatively instead of incorporating into their future work is a waste of your time and an unnecessary emotional trauma for the submitter.

Your purpose as a commenter (IMO) is to offer a suggestion for improvement or compliment what works.

Now that post is about as constructive as this thread. If you don't like bad comments don't enter your photos.
