DPC Site Council has seen a sharp increase in both the number of users on the site, and the number of users requesting name changes.

The following changes have been implemented to manage username changes:

1. Usernames must be at least 2 letters long, and may contain letters, numbers, hyphens or underscores, but must begin with a letter. Spaces are NOT ALLOWED. Existing usernames which do not comply with these standards are allowed to remain, but no name changes that conflict with this policy will be permitted.

2. There will be a 24hr waiting period for all username changes. Users who request a name change will be asked to confirm they still want the change after 24hrs and if so, the change will be done at that time.

3. All previous usernames are listed on user's profiles FOREVER.

4. You must wait 6 months between name changes.

5. Usernames on older accounts without any participation may be taken by newer users if the following criteria is met: The account cannot have a single vote, comment, forum post, or challenge entry, etc associated with it. The account must have been created at DPChallenge (not DPCPrints) and the account must have not been logged into for 2 years. If this criteria is met, the username is up for grabs by anyone.

Why no spaces you ask? Well, having a space in your name doesn't allow you to have a valid DPCPrints URL with your username in it. So you can't tell people: Find my prints at //frisca.dpcprints.com! A space also prevents you from linking to your profile like this: //frisca.dpchallenge.com.

Anyone who has a space in their name and would like to remove it, or have it changed to a hyphen to take advantage of DPCPrints, can do so without the 6 month restriction on successive changes.

Will usernames from inactive accounts ever be purged from the system?

Let's say there's a username that was registered in 2002. Said hypothetical user made one comment, voted 46 times, never used the forums, never entered a challenge, and just plum doesn't use the account. Would there ever be a chance that username would be freed up?

How about if that username is someone's actual name and they wanted that account? And said wanter of username was an active, dues paying member? Would the stuck-in-the-quagmire username then be freed? Especially since it seems that, after half a decade, the person who signed up with the username will never use it?

Just askin'

:)

We decided that accounts with ANY activity (a vote, a comment, a forum post, a challenge entry, etc) or accounts created through DPCPrints will not be purged, but accounts with no activity and that haven't logged in for 2 years can have their usernames taken.

We've received several username change requests over the past few days. This announcement has been in discussion for a while and just recently finalized. :)

Well, since I put in my request before the official announcement, do I have to wait 24 hours? :-)

What if they only have some favorites marked, but no entries, forum posts, comments, or votes?
