Here's the original:

Here was my entry:

I absolutely agree with the comments criticizing the processing of the skin on my back, and the lines near the pearls that aKiwi mentions bother me as well. This photo really stumped me on the processing. I'd love to see what other people could do with it, maybe learn a thing or two about fixing the bad skin. Shall we have at it?

I had a play with it But I couldn't get such a good B&W conversion as you. I tried Gradient map, then B&W conversions using different channels, but as said yours looks more contrasty, but has the lines around the beads.

I am not an expert by any means. I am just a keen learner. And ... it was not a high res image to start playing with ... but heere is my shot at it. If you like it, I will tell you how I did it.

P.S. It was by accident that the (red) diamond on the card came out lighter than the black usually portrayed by B/W photography but I like it.

I use an airbrushing technique for skin (I'm working on a tutorial - stay tuned). Other than brushing the skin the rest was just basic adjustments. I thought the shot needed a little pop though, so I went back and put the color back on the card, just for fun.

Idnic, one of my heroines! How do you think I did, Cindi?

I went the softer less contrasty route.

*blush* thanks! Ours looks very similar, doesn't it? :D You did great on the skin, what technique did you use? cloning, healing, airbrushing, something else? :)

My standard workflow for conversion is dup layers in overlay and soft light at various opacities. Nothing fancy, but that's how it gets contrasty. Shadows eat the hair, so I did a separate shadow/highlight layer on that with dodging and burning. I like the lighting effect I managed to pull out of it, but the skin bothers me. The lines I think were a result of a lot of Neat Image.

One more thing I just remembered: I deepened the shadows on the back by pulling down the midtones in a curves layer.

I find your contrast a little harsh but that is a matter of taste. II used the spot healing brush on the most noticeable blemishes then masked the head above the hairline and the card and hand. then did a layer of 2.0 gauzian blur and blended it in. Then flattened it and used a soft blur brush on the skin and stray hairs and a soft sharpen brush on the pearls ... then channel mixer/monochrome ... then NiceImage 25 25 with 50 sharpening then auto levels auto contrast and auto color ... then adjusted brightness and contrast.

Just flipping back and forth between us ... I see I lost all the detail in the hair and you preserved it ... I should not have masked out the head ... only the hand and card.

P.S. Airbrush scares the bejumpins outta me!

It scares most people, which is why I'm working on a quickie tutorial. Its surprisingly easy, but can be tedious.

*POUT* I think I did pretty good on the skin and I think it looks more natural while still hiding all blemishes.

Mind you ... Cindi's version will probably sell more magazines ... ;)

Something like this?

Maintaining some nuances of the skin texture goes a long way imo.

I think BradP's got the closest to what I was trying to do, but for everyone: how did you do it?

Cindi, I'm looking forward to the airbrushing tutorial!

as someone who has sketched nudes, I loved the way you captured/enhanced the shadows of the back. lovely.

I considered sepia, but thought the pearls needed to be cooler than the warm sepia tones let them be.

I like to see skin texture and shadows so here's my versions although they probably not what you are looking for.
