There were an impressive number of "crop it" comments, which tells me I failed to convey the idea to these folks.

I guess I'm looking for some validation, hoping somebody understood what The Gift was, and the need for the background to hold the players in a supporting role.

:-(

I'll whine if I want to. :-P

So did the girls drop off a few peanuts for your model?

well you got a 6.3x... so someone must have gotten it ?

it's a good image - and taken in a 'natural' enviroment. also the blue jays are all hyper and spazzy around here to ;}

edit - BTW - don't listen to the 'crop it' folks - it would be a better idea to frame the image differently than crop out data later if at all possible. i often wonder how many entries here would be printable at no more the 4x6 due to heavy cropping and sloppy photography - so to speak ;}

I didn't vote but I think your idea would have been more easily conveyed had the girls been facing towards the bird. Since they are standing together and apparently looking at something else, they don't really seem to have any connection with the bird and come across more as something that just happened to be in the background of your shot.

Hey Slippy,

I liked it just the way it is and gave it a 7. I like the OOF background. The shapes are readily identifiable as people and give context to the image.

I find that here (DPC) though, most people want the super closeup and forget any design with the background. A cropped image would not portray the same message.

Ah, except they were working their way down the rail, walking away...
...an unconditional gift, I guess you could say.

Yes I got it, you can see the people in the background who left the peanut and have placed more on the railing. I gave you a 7. I thought the colours were a bit too saturated.

I agree with the colours, but left them in the end. Those were blue jays in that video you did, right? I was really expecting to see a blue jay entry from you.

Hmmmmm, maybe you're that Slippy fellow. Anyway, what were your settings on contrast? I'm assuming you shot RAW and had the option of choosing.

Yeah, I shot RAW. I've always just left the contrast setting at 'High Normal' (I think - pretty sure - at work PC now), which is the default in my Canon RAW conversion software. Things get more contrasty when I adjust Levels and Curves, then USM, however.

Frankly this was one of the few bird images I liked. There was some much ordinary stuff it became a chore to think up anything intelligent to say. This was sharp, in focus and had a little story.
Even one in the top ten is awful, but scored well (I am guessing) becuase it was sharp and clear.
Go figure!!
