So, do you enter a challenge even if you know your shot will get totally hammered? I just entered a shot that I really like, but it's definitely not ribbon quality...and in fact, will most likely get completely shot down. But I entered it becuase I like it.

Anyone else do this as well?

instead, why didn't you post it up for comments in your portfolio,
and maybe follow-up with a "please comment" in the forums?

just a suggestion if you cant take the expected low votes (as you said)

Yep.....That exactly what I do, as "my heart always rules over my brain", everytime.....

One of these days I will LOOK, LISTEN & LEARN.....

Definitely a great alternative. Thanks Crayon. :)

At least we like our own photos...and look to the comments for the constructive criticism...right? :)

That is precisely what I do! But now that I am on a team with the WPL4, I guess I better think more for the voters and less for myself! hmmph!

It never occured to me to do that. As a new member, I will do just that to keep learning. Already I am learning from comments from challenges I have entered via PM's. This seems a better way to go...to get even more feed back.

I just did the same thing! *I* like my shot and I'm really pleased with it, but I'm thinking it's got a ding or two coming that I can spot from here. But I entered it anyway 1) for the feedback (it's kinda nice that people comment and don't know I'm a newb - though they can probably tell this time!), 2) if I plan to get anywhere, I have to get used to sharing my stuff and taking the hits - otherwise I'll never get anywhere, and 3) because I can. I'm hoping for a 4. :D

Good point...but I have high hopes (to a point)...there may be people that like that "different" kind of photo... perhaps posthumous will like it? :) He likes the funky artsy type, from what I've seen.

Anywho...I just feel that if you like your own photo, even though it may not be suited for the top 50, or 100...it still is a part of who you are.

Welcome! I still consider myself a newbie as well... and I'm definitely learning and have a long way to go. ;)

I certainly will enter a shot that I don't think is ribbon quality, but I will still go out of my way to make it the best damn non-ribbon-winner I can capture.

I am a newbie as well but I'm submitting my photos in the constests to get the good and bad comments so I can improve my skills. Yeah sure I have the photos I like alot. I'm really new to this whole digital slr thing, so comments help me to learn how to use the camera better.

I hear ya, girl. I definitely try to make it as good as I can (with my limited skills at this point). Hopefully one day soon I'll have a ribbon quality entry so I won't have this issue anymore. :)

Practically every week ... : )

I just entered a shot in Entrance that will contend for the brown ribbon. Why? Because I think it's lovely. Maybe someone will like it. I am willing to disgust fifty rules-oriented people in hopes of pleasing one person with stars in his eyes.

somebody has left a comment on my "match" entry simply saying "brown Ribbon?".

It almost made me smile as much as the entry itself.

My notes from a recent challenge:
"My goal is to enter a shot which I like, feel that it fits the challenge, and get a sub-five score. I am pretty sure I will succeed here... "

I like shots that are too dark, shadows everywhere, and make people think...not that they necessarily do...
At least posthumous occasionally gets those very "stars in his eyes". And then I am happy.

I like that you think "outside the box." ;)
You have a creative eye, and an open mind. Thank you for that.

I enter something I like. Partly because I'm clueless about what the average voter likes and partly because I'm often looking for the people on the upper end of the voting scale. My question is often less "how high will this score" than it is "will this connect with some people?"

I also will enter something just to share a laugh, like my procrastination entry. I knew it wasn't a phenomenal photo as a photo, but every comment that came in that showed me someone had laughed made me happy. And when some folks actually engaged enough to tell me what to do first, especially when SaraR left a comment that played along and took me a moment to understand, it made me grin especially big. :)

As for idnic's comment that she'll sometimes enter something even if she knows it's not ribbon material, well, uhhh, yeah. Me, too. We'll just skip on by the fact that I've never thought any of my shots was ribbon material. ;)

magen, do you mean to say that those who adhere to challenge topics are non-creative, and narrow minded? :p

HA! no way! I knew my blonde hair would get me in trouble at some point! ;)
