Is joining deviant art a good idea? Or is it more for the "fluffy" artists? Are there better places to make a place for yourself as a photographer in learning?

I hear DPC is a good idea.

DPC? Never heard of it...

DeviantArt is exactly as it's name sounds... mostly art from deviants. :-) There is some good stuff there, but as far as photography goes... nah, not so much really great photography.

Stick around here, ask questions, read tutorials, ask more questions..

Couple of folks here use DeviantArt. You can get more people to look at your work if you join certain clubs there. You know when someone you subscribe to posts something new.

It's free to try.

Deviantart has lots of bad stuff and lots of really good stuff, I have an account there and I like the feedback ;)

I personally really enjoy deviantART. But then again, I paint and do poetry and lots of other stuff besides photography so I feel like there's so much more on there for me to immerse myself in. But as far as learning goes, nothing really beats being an active user at dpc.

I used to frequent deviantART alot - I would be considered an ol' timer there. Joining deviantART - Yes, it is free but if you want more features you need to become a subscriber. You ask if it is a good idea. Depends on what you are looking for:

If you are looking for good art and good photography.

Yes there is good art and good photography there - but it is like finding a needle in the haystack IMHO.

If you are looking for feedback from fellow artists/photographers and want to reach a wider audience.

Hmmm. A good analogy is that DA is a thriving mega-metropolis in which the small unknown can and will get lost in. Unless you join a group or frequent the chat forums (which I stayed away from with a one hundred foot pole)or get lucky with being featured your photography/art will most likely get buried in the THOUSANDS of submissions a day

****If you look at the front page near the button 'categories' you will see the current total number of submissions or deviations as we call them is 30,328,210 and climbing at a rate of 55 - 70 deviations submitted A MINUTE ****

In the earlier days of deviantART when it was smaller it was easier to converse and get feedback from fellow artists. Now that the site is akin to "bright lights, big city" as it is far more difficult to get good feedback or critiques. But you never know, you might hit a groove should you join. So I do encourage you to at least scope it out but do not get your hopes high up if you are there to get recognized. It is difficult. Likewise in getting feedback. Tis difficult but not impossible.

I still have a presence there at DA but I have found I like it far better here at DPC because the forums are friendlier, one can get better feedback on their work, it is easier to navigate, it is more like a friendly small city than a large metropolis, and MOST individuals here are in the same life stage, life experiences and/or age category as myself. I do want to state that there are some truly wonderful artists at deviantART. I have been fortunate to encounter quite a few - some of which I consider friends.

Bottomline you just have to take the good, the bad, and the ugly and decide what is best for you.

If you want to better your technical skills, then this (DPC) is the audience because people (certainly not all!) tend to appreciate the more conventional elements of photography, for example if your picture is not 'tack' sharp even if it's not intended to be you get criticised etc... I really enjoy dpchallenge because it's keeps me thinking creatively, rather like assigments on a phtographjy degree course would work. I havent got too inolved in the forum side of things but I can see it's great for getting answers for questions etc
If you want to express yourself in a more original way there is much more exciting work on deviantart, but there is so much superfluous nonsense on there. I use pBase and creativity and expression are valued more than the old technicals but then the group of peers I have there (whom I have been attracted to by their phototgraphic style and philosophy)this is what they look for.. There are some very special people posting on pBase and the good stuff rises to the top as it were. How can Manny Librodo be wrong?
Betterphoto is good too!

An example is this photograph which was really appreciated on pBase by the most talented photographers I know:

But here I had lots of feedback saying the frame spoilt the image.

I think deviantART was a good idea once... probably still is - I bet the owner makes a ton of money. It's very much like the 'MySpace' of art - meaning it's almost entirely built on social networking more than anything else. It DOES have a free service by which you can sell prints, but, in my opinion, the artist's 'cut' isn't really worth it. No harm in starting an account and poking around, though.

DeviantArt is another one of those places where being popular is more important than being good at what you do...
