Pointers, filters, etc. about taking pictures in the snow???

Plus: snow boots, gloves or mitts, toque, a warm coat, water to drink, and a plastic bag to put the camera in when returning to the warmth of your car or going back indoors (to avoid condensation).

I often set custom white balance to the snow (same direction as shooting), measure light on the sky, and shoot away, but if shooting against the light I will compensate about -1/2 to -1 F-stop.

Extra batteries. Keep them in a pocket close to the body.

Sorry to show my ignorance, but what is EV exposure compensation?

Plain old exposure compensation. Exposure compensation is changing the exposure from what the camera meter suggests as the correct exposure.
