Going for my lowest score ever. One commenter nailed how I did the shot right on, others are guessing and only picking up parts of the tech. used. Appears most folks like it. I figure it would score well or very low. The DNMC folks got me....(my fault for stepping out of the box).....Lol.

So far its a personal best for me. 6.34 with 220 votes. I sort of feel like scores are almost artificially higher on this challenge because so many people blurred instead of panned.

I can't find the image. But one of the best panning shots I ever saw only had the head of a biker in focus, the body, bike, forground and background were blurred. The whole subject doesnt need to be in fully sharp imo.

I'm getting killed in voting because people think that my contribution DNMC because I panned my camera in a circular movement.

Why do people think that panning is restricted to only horizontal or vertical movement? Is it?

Panning can be in a circle, but I think the main idea is to have your subject in sharp focus and the background blurred.

i think votes are artificially low because of all the nit-picking over what constitutes panning ;-)

i also think a lot of interesting images are getting absolutely hammered, and i think a lot of images absolutely true to the challenge are getting sucked down as well.

Very well defined! This is exactly what panning is. Right from when I shot with film until today, there is only one true definition for panning. Despite all the excuses to the contrary. Of course, someone will disagree, but just ask motor racing and horse racing photogs which they get paid for! It is as described by samhall!

Well my score is still dropping off: 6.9189.
I got my first camera in 1961, and love taking photos, self taught, and never really thought about what I’m doing, so this is the first time I ever really thought about motion blur, I went out looking for ideas, and got lucky, so whatever the outcome, I for one will be very happy.
After reading through this thread, I conclude that a motion pan, is a shot of a moving subject, taken from a fixed point, panning the camera in whichever direction is needed to keep the subject, or part of, sharp, and leaving the background blurred by the motion trails, in the direction of the movement, if the camera moves then it becomes a tracking shot, or dolly shot, as one member suggests.

HI Everyone,
For the first time one of my pictures is doing very well.....However, some individuals have informed me that they do not even think it is a picture....that it is 3D modeling....I am currently a senior in high school and have taken AP Statistics. When analyzing the percentages of voters who left negative based comments it becomes very clear that the majority do not have any of there own pictures on DP Challenge. I would be happy to accept criticism if good reasons and helpful info is provided as well. I am also an AP Art student and have spent countless hours critiquing and being critiqued. Those who have left positive comments have, for the majority, had reasonably high scoring pictures on DP challenge or winning photos. It is hard to take comments from individuals who have 1 picture, been a member for one week, and have already made 400 comments and only half have been rated as helpfull. This website is about photography and learning. SO please lets all help fulfill that mission and critique pictures in ways that actually give the photographer useful advice weather positive or negative.

Just because people don't have pictures entered, does not mean that they are not competent to judge. For all we know, they may be the greatest photographers in the world.....

Time to face some facts (& some statistics....isn't it true that 95% of statistics are made up on the spot...). How many people do you think are really capable on making correct judgements on photo's? I am talking about people who are formally trained & professionals (I.E, possibly like yourself to an extent)? 10%? Maybe 20%?

The rest (& yes, I am one of them & I know, I don't make very many comments...so I am part of the problem)are enthusiest amatures. We comment on what we see & what we like, not necessarily the technical aspect of a photo.

Be thankful that you receive comments....sure use what you can to improve your images, but dont belittle those who give a comment on what THEY see.

PS, Quincy....I have looked at your profile....I like what you have done so far, but on your last entry (song titles), I thought that there were some legit helpful comments. How come you didn't recognise them?

While there were some good panning shots, some were just soft focus, blury, things like that. I counted about 26 images that didn't even include any panning.....

Heading for my highest score, though, not being modest here, I am not sure a really like my entry. I was expecting a 5+, which happened in the first 20 votes, then went up to 7+ in the 100. Now seems to be stable at:

yup. i use this technique often and would like to think i'm good at it, but not according to the popular vote here.

Well my shot is sharp, in focus blurred background etc etc, I have had 297 votes, 8 positive comments, and am at the giddy heights of 5.3xx :-(

I can take it . . sniff . .

Hold on - maybe this is one of those new rule sets where low is good . .
