It is poor form. It doesn't put me personally off, in fact it would encourage me to comment more just to annoy whoever it was trying to tell me what to do ;) but, yeah, it can intimidate people, especially newer members.

Keep commenting, please. Most people, indeed almost all, appreciate your efforts.

Oh,. and Name 'n Shame the plonker.

Some of the best comments I have ever received regarding my photos are from my dad. He know's horses. Thats really his thing. Photography? Not so much. He does however know what he likes. And what he doesn't like. He gives really harsh critiques but every thing he says is bang on.

So when someone tells you to be quiet because you haven't submitted anything? Well I guess art critics don't always paint either..

Oh yes and for myself? I really look forward to any and all comments. I would never tell someone to NOT comment simply because they aren't involved in the challenges. The only time I've complained in the past is when the person just gives a bad (i.e. not useful) comment. E.g. Stevie Wonder wants his glasses back. (I STILL don't know what they meant by that).

Anyways

I don't think it would be productive to do so. He could be an incredible person that was having an exceptionally bad day.

It's POSSIBLE. But ... he did not respond to my reply. He may be having a bad week or month. You never know what is happening to people in their lives. I have a quote about paradigms ... its very long ... but if you want to read it I can upload it to a link that I can create so you can read it. Basically it is a story where you HATE what is happening in the story ... then just about pee your pants when you realize that your hate was so so misdirected.

Well ... I cannot afford a paid membership here so only have my initial very failed abstract attempt at fences in my portfolio and cannot upload other examples.

HOW freaking astounding is THAT?!

Not really. For me if i take you to lunch or dinner. It would cost me more than one year membership. Imagine you are here and I treated you with a dinner. (I quite frequently take friends to dinner etc.) So really not a big thing.
(I will think I took dinner out one evening and ask my wife to cook something different).

OK ... sorry ... did not realize their names were links to their portfolio.

Well congratulations. I think I may have just become a member of the sponsored club. How ... moving and kind of such people.

Well TYVM! I SO much appreciate the opportunity to show more photos than I have submitted to contests in the recent past ... not to mention the opportunity to enter more challenges.

So how do I/we activate this?

P.S. Trust me ... I will get you back for this SOMEhow!

Nobody has ever said that to me. They'd probably end up holding their head in their lap if they were serious.

Ditto to everyone else - the person's a git and deserves whatever they get.

I am reading this thread feeling a `tiny` bit guilty.. Sometimes I can be a bit harsh when leaving comments, especially to those who I feel may be shooting for the brown and enter something completely out of challenge. That really winds me up. In the current BW challenge I left probably my harshest commment ever, but eventually went back and changed it, it was a bit `blue` even for my standards.

I do leave nice comments as well, as some of you might know!!

I find people who know little about the technical side of photography look more with their heart than their 'expert opinion' I like those people. :-D

I am one of those people who do look at the technical side of a photo but only after my first impression. The perfect photo has never been made and will never be made. 'Cause there will always be someone who will find something to comment about. Another forum I visit a lot is renowned for the harsh critics. I've learned a lot there :-)

so don't let one loser bother you ;-)

there are a LOT of freakin awesome DPCers! You look great in your new blue shirt. I hope to see you enter in a lot of challenges, and feel free to give your HONEST comments/critics on any of my images. I've got thick enough skin to take whatever you have to say. :) I really don't think I have gotten any really horrible comments, or replies t comments I have left. I think I have all the meanies skeered of me :D

WOW! and wow.

Did I mention wow?

Thank you ALL so much for your support and especially a HUGE thank you to Arjun ... of course ...

I hope to make Arjun, in PARTICULAR (and you ALL) proud to have morally and financially supported me in my efforts to become a better photographer.

P.S. LOOK OUT! ... you have sponsored your competition.

Thank you and now this old man has to go away for a while and deal with the emotions.

Don't forget to start putting pics in your portfolio! Congrats on the blue shirt, and thanks to Arjun for the kind gesture.
