I am new here ... I have made MANY comments to photographers here whilst voting as to why I love their photos and often what I think would make it a better photo to my eyes and usually add "IMO" to such comments. I try to be polite and constructive in my comments.

I received an email that states "You should take some more images before being a critic!"

Well ... I cannot afford a paid membership here so only have my initial very failed abstract attempt at fences in my portfolio and cannot upload other examples.

Should I make NO comments to photographers telling them that I like their photos or why I would have given them a higher score if they had done this or that IMO?

EDITED: ... until I have more photos in my portfolio?

No, you should just ignore the chumps.

Agreed.

Nah, don't let yourself be intimidated; keep going, and (like karmabreeze and mk say), ignore "the chumps".

I wonder if I know the name of the user off-hand... hmmm... probably, it sounds a lot like a certain user that posted a similar thing in a forum thread a few days ago.

But, no, comment at will.

You dont have to be a pro-photographer to know what you like or dont like about a picture. Write it off to someone being thin skinned. They probably already regret being overly sensitive.

Restating some thoughts previously made here on DPC:

Even one who has never taken a photograph in their life can recognize immediately whether they like an image or not. Your opinion is exactly that ... and that you took the time to view the photographer's image and the added extra time to express your opinion should be considered "gifts" to the photographer. One who does not accept such a gift is ungrateful.

"you should make more comments before you comment!" LOL
just ignore it, buddy

Greetmir, take it from a person that gets a good share of negative comments on his photos (due to artistic tastes) that you haven't hurt anyone.

I read through some of your comments (including some on my photos) and your tastes are very eclectic. This is a good thing. Offering advice isn't bad.

WOW! ... SO many replies in so few minutes!

Thank you for making me feel MUCH more welcome here than I did a bit ago!

I REALLY appreciated it. I only sent this person an email back saying ... "I think I have a right to my opinion like everyone else." and left it at that ... but wondered if I was breaking some kind of newbie unwritten rule. I mean, of course I thought this person was a bit sensitive ... don't even know if I ever commented on a photo of theirs. It seems they thought that I had SOME nerve commenting on others without a more impressive portfolio not even knowing who I am or how many images I have taken (or sold) in my life. But my main point is what you are saying. A polite comment as to why you like someone's image and what would make you like it even better ... should not get a response like this, methinks ... I just wanted to check with the majority.

Not trying to stir up stuff ... was just making sure I did not do a faut pas or sumpin.

Some other suggestions you could use includes:
"if you can't take an honest critique then don't post it up, you @#%^$!"
"ok, if it makes you feel better, I'll change my comment to (your photo is the best!) but my low vote stays"
"even if nobody says it, your photo still suck. at least I'm honest"

IMHO...the one thing on this site that absolutely should support your right to your own vote...is the right to your own comment. I'm certain that my little vote out of probably 300 voters on a particular photo will carry very little weight to the photographer, but the comment provides an opportunity to reveal my thinking behind my vote directly and add my own individual thoughts to an otherwise anonymous voting process.

How your comment is perceived may not be as you intended, but no matter what...you have the right to express your own thoughts. But, remember, the photographer whose photo you are commenting on...also has the right to comment back.

That's just my two cents.

It really annoys me that someone would send such an email. It's emails and responses to comments like that that discourage people from leaving comments in the first place, devaluing the whole site.

Agreed....it really puts you off commenting doesn't it?? I think it's really poor form!

I check out your profile and I think that you have been a big part of DPC. So many times I see people who do not take part, who do not respond (helpful) to the comments that are made on their photos. I say...keep it up and chin up :)
PS your url does not work
