Halloween Challenge: Too much BS, I mean PS.
11/01/2003 12:40:04 AM · #2
isn't that kind of the point? no editing rules for a bit of a no-holds-barred fun challenge? i like some of the work done in the challenge. i wouldn't do it on a photo of my kid, but it makes sense for this challenge in my mind.

That's what I was thinking too Pedro. It's a fun contest for a fun holiday! I learned a heck of a lot from doing my one photo here that I can't wait to use in a more practical (not so dramatic) ways on more usual types of photos...

I think there are limits. This site is called DPChallenge, not PSchallenge. The editing restriction removal should not mean that we forget what we are. Photographers. Too many shots are just Photoshop creations not photographs.

Of course this is just my opinion.

But isn't that the whole point of Halloween? We make ourselves and our environments into something that is NOT REAL for a day. It's not like we do this every day of our lives, well some people maybe. How can ya take Halloween so seriously...

I agree that there are some that could have crossed the line...I guess my line is a lot further away for a challenge like this.

opinions always welcome Mario. :)

I don't think mariomel is taking Halloween too seriously, just pointing out that some are not taking the photography part of the challence seriously. I am only a small part of the way thru the entries but have seen a few clunkers so far.

There are some fun photos in the collection, and it was fun to see SOME photoshop goodies (not that I entered this one).

However, the high level of Photoshop work here, though great for this challenge, I think does detract from the actual photography.

If they dropped the rules and ALL challenges allowed unlimited PS to be used to this level I'd be gone from here for sure.

For this challenge though ..... fun :)

I totally agree with you here. And looking through the shots I DO see a couple that used PS effects for no real good apparent reason. But there are also a couple of very cool, fun shots that couldn't have been done without! For something like Halloween I see NOTHING wrong with no editing rules but would NOT want to see it on all challenges either.

I was hoping that someone from the Long Island area was going to get pictures of the " Amityville Horror House".

the use of photoshop can be fun...some folks had more fun than others:) but it does need to be thought of more as a tool than as the canvas. I like some here, kept the use of PS to a minimum (wonder if I should have used more given my current score!)The challenge did indicate an easing of rules...I think there are some great contributions (as always) both with a bit of PS and without.

Mine too. I might have done a little more, but probably nothing beyond the normal rules. But between computer foul-ups, the 24 hour limit, and not getting an idea until about an hour before the deadline, all I had time for was Neat Image, levels, sharpen and resize. Got it up at 8:59:59.9 PST (or there abouts).

So far, I've only been through about half, but I've only seen a couple PSed to a point I'd consider over-done. But I'd rate them the same level as a blurry snapshot - nice try, but lots of room for improvement.

No BS, if you lift the editing rules all together, then Its ridiculous to complain about it. No rules, means no rules...at this point it its mute. You cant offer a unrestricted editing photo challenge and complain if it looks like too much PS.

The challenge wasnt a , "use PS to make your shot look like a real photo", challenge. Its wide open, and anything goes.

Too complain is useless.

This is the problem that happens all the time at this site, there is no real challenges, that allow the use of real tools available to the real working professional photographer. Tools that are used everyday in the publishing buisness, stock image buisness, etc. Tools that have been available to the film photographer for 50 years.

For some dumb reason, the challenges around here are either full out no holds barred free editing, or the restrictive editing that is available every week here.

Its late, am Im tired, but save your breath complaining....no rules is no rules....no need to complain about it.

Truth be told, all we need is a few more tools, to represent real photography, we dont need all out editing to be happy.

lol, the point is moot, Ill leave the mute part in. Its definately funnier reading a post made the next morning, after a bunch of beers :)

I see some that used Photoshop very well, some that didn't use it, and some that should have used it ;)lol

mine would be legal too. except that i edited the hell out of it. other than the dodge/burn, cloning, two or three filters and liquify feature, it's all straight out of the cam.

Okay, I admit it... I put my hand up, I'm guilty of too much Photoshoppery this time. However, in my defense, I don't really do Halloween so I had problems coming up with a shot in 24 hours. The quickest and easiest way was to use Photoshop more heavily than I'd have liked.
Please DON'T let this put everyone off more challenges with no post-editing restrictions... all it takes is for the rules to say that the image must look natural and the voters will make sure this is enforced.

Just wanted to clarify something... I don't believe lifting the editing restrictions allowed us to combine several photos. Am I right, in which case several photos are going to need disqualifying?

Its always been allowed in past open-editing challenges, I don't see why this one should be different.

Darn... I would have done a different shot!

I can't believe that this thread was started in the first place.
And frankly, I'm pretty much over the trashing of photoshop.

Just because I use it doesn't mean I'm not an ok photographer.

I'm not good yet, but I'm getting there. I work hard on my images. I spent a lot of time on my entry and yes it's ps'd.

But that was rather the point wasn't it?

There were no post processing restrictions. So we all could have fun.

You didn't have to use it. Or you could use it to your hearts content.

hmmm,, I seem to have a sugar hangover from last night................

I wish we could learn more about photoshop through this site...and through non restrictive challenges. I have interesting ideas but have not the know how to accomplish a final result! Ive seen some amazing artwork produced through photography and photoshop combined. Photoshop is a wonderful tool.
