Work are sending me to Mountain View (45 mins south of San Francisco) for a couple of weeks in late Jan/early Feb. I've been to San Francisco itself a couple of times before, and done the "usual tourist guff" - I've got enough shots of the golden gate bridge to last me for life ;)

So, does anyone have suggestions for good places to go outside or around San Francisco? Mainly thinking about landscape and nature photography, but any suggestions would be gatefully received! I'll have several evenings and a weekend to spare. Cheers!

Wrong season but are the wineries open that time of year? Lotsa photg stuff at a lot of those - old barrels, vines with leading lines..... oh and the cellar door sales :-)

If you would like to shoot a night cityscape, you can drive out to treasure island (half way between SF and Oakland) and shoot back towards the city of SF. All of the tall financial district buildings are lit up and the bay bridge is awesome as it ties it all together. It's the first exit you can take once you are on the bay bridge headed towards Oakland. You exit, and curve around toward some military base. There is a parking lot right in front of the main gate to the military base. It's very easy to find.

Here is one I shot from treasure island. It is about 9 shots stitched together.

Have fun. I love shooting in San Francisco.

If the weather is nice and clear, you should check out Twin Peaks in San Francisco. It's easy to find. It has the huge radio antenna on it. You will have a 360 degree veiw of San Francisco.

Treasure island is definately a great spot to shoot. I have taken a number of shots from there.

Also, you mentioned that you took a lot of pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge, but if you didn't make it up the Marin Headlands, I would definately recommend going there for a nice perspective of the bridge.

Also, just walking around in downtown SF from any of the first four BART stops from the east bay will give you a nice view of downtown buildings.

Except you can't take photos of these two views from Treasure Island. These views are only available from Yerba Buena Island. There's technically no parking along Hillcrest Road where it's easiest to see these views. Although there are only a few patrols through the area they make a really big stink about parking in no parking zones next to government property so it's probably best to have somebody drop you off above Yerba Buena Tunnel, wait awhile down at Treasure Island, then come back for you.

They've just closed off a couple of beaches in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore for elephant seal birthing season; there are designated overlooks where you should be able to view/shoot from. Muir Woods are over the GG Bridge in that direction as well.

In Mountain View you are also about equidistant from the Santa Cruz coastal area, and maybe two hours from the Monterey/Carmel area; Pt. Lobos and Big Sur are just south of there.

If you do some searching in the forums, there have been at least a couple of other good threads with suggestions for stuff to shoot between Big Sur and Sonoma ...

Brilliant, thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I should have searched *first* but I totally forgot about that. Time to go and have at the other forum threads :)

The General beat me to Muir Woods but I'll second that place. Napa Valley is gorgeous, especially up into St. Helena and Calistoga, although mid-winter isn't the most photogenic season. I'm not too familiar with other areas around SF, sorry.
