After giving it a bit of thought and realizing how seriously most of us take this website, I'd say no. If possible, not even a WPL teammate should be allow to vote on a participants contest in fairness to all as well as minimizing conflicts of intererst. I would like to know your comment.

Of course they should- who else is there to vote??

Doesn't appear that they are voting anyway. I have 142 votes, 182 views, out of 486 entries in the free study.

Yep, I think emorgan is right. I can see where it may be a conflict of interest to vote on a challenge you've entered, but for instance if you take all 411 people out of the voting in the Centered Composition challenge, who is left to vote? Compound that by not letting any WPL folks vote on any challenge where a teammate has an entry, and there are too few people left to vote.

Besides, we would never get comments from some of the great photographers on the site who enter a lot of challenges if they were restricted from voting.

If people just refrain from voting on photos if they know who the photographer is, and vote fairly regardless of whether or not they have a shot entered, life will be good.

If, according to the SC's, all of the people that vote 1's or 10's don't affect the outcome of a vote, why would there be any problem with someone voting for their own image or other images within a challenge they entered? Even if they were biased? I see this on other sites as well where contests were ruined because a few people put pressure on others to not vote if they entered into that contest. Worse, they say they should not vote on their own image. And there are always those that fall for the guilt trip, which really just ruins it for everyone. Unless the rules state so, there is no reason why someone shouldn't vote even if they have entered an image.

This topic has been discussed more times than I can count. Why keep beating a dead horse? Do a little search and you'll find several threads that discuss this same issue.

Well, maybe its been discussed alot before, but since I haven't seen the previous discusions, I'd like to throw my 2-cents in for people not being allowed to vote in their own contests. People are so addicted to this site that I'd bet a month's pay that they would still faithfully vote -- and probably enjoy it much more -- in challenges where they don't have a stake. I think they'd vote more fairly too.

An course it would go a long way towards cutting down on troll voting of 1's and 2's just to keep good photos' average down so theirs can be higher.

So there. . . thanks for letting me beat a dead horse that I've wanted to beat for a long time.

Oh, and I forgot something: 1's and 2's and 10's do most definitely affect the outcome of the challenges! One time in a Bokeh challenge, I came in 4th place and had the EXACT same score all the way down to 4 decimal places as the yellow ribbon winner. Don't tell me that a 1 or a 10 wouldn't affect the outcome of a contest that close.

My wife works at a store. She tends to get mad when people keep asking the same questions over and over. I try to tell her ... "But to that person, it is the FIRST time the question has been asked" and she should treat each customer with the same care and respect as she treated the first customer.

I realize we have a "search capability" here, something we don't have in real life, but I still think each time someone new asks the question they should be treated with the same respect as the first one. If the question has already been dealt with, kindly show them where they can "learn more". But don't berate them for beating a dead horse.

I get where the OP is coming from. But I happen to feel that there should be AT LEAST AS MANY votes in a challenge as there are entries in that challenge. Right now I'm sitting with 134 votes in a challenge that has 486 images. That tells me the submitters themselves aren't voting. Perhaps the OP likes this more. But I'd prefer to have more votes. :-)

THANK YOU!!!!!! Well said!

If you can vote fairly and uniformly across any sort of challenge, then I see no problem with voting on the challenges that you've entered.

If you can't, then don't. I tend not to these days because sometimes I think my judgement can be clouded by what I think of my own photo.

I think that one is perhaps more sensitive and empathetic when voting for a challenge in which one has submitted a picture.

About the original question, any sketchy voting pattern is discarded once voting is over so even if people vote other images down to make their score higher, it will most likely not count.

As others have stated: There wouldn't be anybody left to vote if we couldn't vote in a challenge we entered ourselves.

I'd rather turn it the other way: If you enter a challenge you HAVE to vote on all pictures in that challenge.

I think you'll find you CAN'T vote on your OWN image in a DPC challenge. Which seems a pretty sensible ruling and fairly standard practice.

Thanks for your 2 cents. I'm relatively new here, so this is a new horse for me. :)

That's a thought !

I try to vote for all entries in the challenges that I have entered. I could never figure out why there would be 400 entries and 150 votes. You don't have to vote all at one session but I think you should vote in the challenges you enter. You do, however, have to be fair.
Sometimes I can pick out certain photogrhers work. When I see "Northern Lights/ Iceland" I will sometimes think it is Larus but my vote isn't influenced by the fact that it is his photo (probably) - if it is a 10 it gets a 10 if it is a 4 or 5 or 6 - that is what I vote.
I also agree with some of the other comments - if you don't allow people who entered a specific challenge the right to vote in it, you could start winding up with 25 or 30 votes instead of 142.
My 2 cents.

Anyone can change the rules but nobody can change the game.
More people voting is better than fewer people voting.
You can't legislate morality.

I try to vote on every challenge (big or small) whether I've entered or not. Personally, I vote high for the photos that meet the criteria the best and speak to me. I vote lower for those that don't. I vote very quickly, basically, I vote with my gut feeling. Once done, I sometimes go back and adjust up or down in comparison to those that I gave the same score to.
I think we're adult enough to be fair.

I am in favor of voting in challenges that you enter yourself. However, it requires the entrant and voter to be as impartial as possible - rating each entrant using a similar approach. My personal goal in entering any challenge is not to win a prize, but to become a better photographer, to learn techniques, challenge myself in areas I have no experience (portraits, etc) and learn from my own mistakes by the comments people make about my entries.
01/07/2007 11:34:41 AM · #23
If I didn't vote on challenges I entered, I'd only be voting on one open challenge a week; and THAT would be the one I had the least interest in entering, and by extension he least interest in voting on or even viewing, for the most part.

I can see everyone's point here, but my own personal rule is not to vote in a challenge which I have entered. That way, there can never be an accusation of impropriety.
