Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Hi All,

I just returned to my home in Toronto from a fun-filled day in New York City attending the 2003 Photo Plus Expo Show and Conference. It was terrific fun and very educational. I only attended one seminar / course on portrait lighting (by Hasselblad), as my time was very limited, but I found it to be helpful and informative. The exhibits are all packed with all of the latest toys and gadgets. As well, the attendance seemed to be much higher than last year or the year before. The aisles were jam-packed with fellow amateur photographers, professionals, serious hobbyists, and digital imaging enthusiasts.

A highlight for me was the new Epson 4000 series printer, it was remarkable. Epson 4000

The good folks at Nikon let all sorts of interesting hints out about the much rumoured D2x, but they fell short of actually stating that it existed or when we might see it. I had the D2H in my hands and it is remarkable too. The new chip technology that Nikon is using is a big advancement to the previous generation.

Adobe seems to be on a roll with the new Photoshop CS, which they claimed in a presentation was really version 8.0, but with a new moniker instead of a number. It is indeed, both powerful and feature-packed.

At the Sekonic light meter display, they offered a variety of DVD educational diskettes that I found to be very interesting. They can be purchased via your local dealer or from their web site. I intend to order a few - lighting, portraits, how to properly use a handheld light meter, etc.

I strongly recommend that anyone who has the chance this weekend, to go visit this show in NYC. It was fun as usual.

WOW, I was unaware of the Epson 4000. A new printer is not in my budget for a long time, but that one makes me drool.
PhotoShop CS is going to be fun, I ordered my upgrade yesterday from the Adobe site, can't wait 'til it gets here!

WOW! is right! At MSRP, it will cost $896 to replace all 8 ink cartridges in the Epson 4000 with the high-capacity 220ml carts.

Too bad we did not meet. I read a week or two ago that several other DPCers are planning to connect on Saturday at this show. You should search the Forum postings and connect too. This much fun is better when it is shared.

Dayum. I'll have to see that some day. Would be fun to be surrounded by so many fellow photographers. In my little town, there is only me and the guy who takes mug shots at the county jail.

What about the DMV person or he/she doesn't count because it's a bad shot ;)lol

Interesting quote from the Luminous Landscape about this show.

'I attended Photo East Expo in New York yesterday. It seemed to be somewhat smaller and not as well attended as last year. There also wasn't much in the way of new products.'

He seemed to have a very different view on the show. Goes on to say how huge the Epson 4000 was too.

This year's show was great and personally, I found it to be much more populated than on the two previous occasions that I attended.

Here is an image that I snapped from an exhibit gallery high above the trade floor. If the attendance was higher or lower than last year does not really matter too much, it was great fun for all of us who attended anyway. There were many new products shown, watch the trade publications this month to learn more. Canon, Nikon, and Hasselblad - the show anchors - all introduced new products. But, mostly accessories, lenses, and add-ons to the new camera bodies introduced in the past 6 to 12 months. So, if a new body is the goal, I agree that their was not too much. I understand that a few of the second tier players - Olympus, Pentax, and others did introduce some very interesting new products, such as camera bodies.

The new Epson is simply huge, the author that you quote is right. Many standing around the introduction made the same comment. But, they were also stunned by the image quality and the low price points. You need to remember that this show is part commercial, part trade, and part high-end enthusiast. So, it is not targeting the average consumer, although many attended too.

I wasn't posting it as a prelude to an argument - I read the review at luminous landscape - it was just another person's view of the same conference so it seems appropriate to add it to the thread about that conference.
