What are people's takes on borders? I am just afraid that If I were to add a border that people wouldn't neccasarily like it, like they would feel it detracts from the photo. I just want to hear people's personal opinions about them.

I asked the same type of question a while back.

Incidently "grace" is my first entry with a frame.

I say a simple border would do fine. It does affect scores I believe, if you can come up with a nice presentation. Don't be to elaborate or fancy with it.

I went to the Forums page and entered "Border" in the Search field. The following links were on the first two pages of results; I'm sure if you search farther back you'll find the same opinions repeated several more times:

I have read several posts where borders have been discussed and my general take is that many voters are not fond of borders. The thought is that the photo should stand on its own merit.

Personally, I like borders. I think it provides a similar effect as a frame or matting. However I do understand/respect the other point of view.

Bottom line for me is, submit what you like. I typically do not see titles, but I always see borders (if present).

How would you add a border that is not considered spot editing?

Crop somewhat smaller than the final size. Increase the canvas size to the finished size, with the Background color set to that of your border.

Also, the rules specifically allow borders. The only borders I've done are like Paul described. You can make them a little fancier by changing the background color and increasing the canvas size 2, 3, 4... times (like in this shot: ). And there have been many entries with even fancier borders - ones where the image sort of fades out into the border (Sonifo did this one that I really liked: ). The only limitations in the rules are they can't contain text, clipart, or other artwork.
