I am glad I met so many wonderful people on DPC, great photographers, kind and caring.
One can learn a lot in here, get motivation, inspiration.
For me the reason I got into DPC was CHALLANGE to become better, te get critique and improove with the help of it.
BUT what do I see now? Wonderful photos are beeing scored so low, sorry to say...but there is so much RUBBISH in here now which has got nothing to do with CHALLANGE for me.
I don`t want to sound rude at all, I am just dissappointed and I think my last Grace submission is really gonna be my last.

I'm sorry to hear that Nasti. I agree that there are a great number of photos which individuals find inspiring but are ignored or denegrated by the masses, but such is the nature of the site.

I now purely use the site for the challenge aspect, to think, find, shoot and display an image in a given timeframe, I gave up worrying about scores and mass appeal a while back. I shoot and enter an image for myself and if I want honest feedback I know who I can trust to give it.

Anastasia,

I'm sorry to hear you're having thoughts of quitting DPC. I have to agree with rob when he says he's here strictly for the challenge aspect of it. Challenge sites such as DPC are great motivator to get up off the computer or the couch and go shoot images. Now, whether or not you choose to shoot for yourself or for the DPC voters is strictly up to you. I personally find it refreshing to see challenges approached in new and interesting ways...images that are off the beaten path even if they don't finish in the top 10.

I must admit, seeing your post I instantly thought "here goes another person who moans about their not-so-good photo's being ranked not-so-good by the voters and getting fed up with low scores, when all along they think their image is better than everyone elses.

However, looking at your profile, your images are superb! Please don't go ;( DPC needs good photographers like yourself, otherwise it will become a haven for 300 dull & lifeless images every challenge, and will be no fun for anyone.

There is a lot of crap here, and crap people moaning all the time (my pet hate) but they usualy score low and the greats usualy score high so all is pretty fair.

Ps: Are you gary's Sister/wife/daughter/pseudonym/split personality? Or just huge conincidence your in Germany, have the same surname and email?

PPS: please no leave DPC ;)

Why don't just take it as 'everyone was once a beginner'??

She's my better half Jon :-)

Nasti it is sad news, but not totally unexpected to me after some of our discussions lately. I fully understand you and your decision and hope that sometime in the future you'll reconsider, and decide to start submitting again. You are right though, there have been some changes around here the last months which have seen many good photographers stop entering challenges.
10/30/2003 06:28:23 AM · #8
When i started here I had only had my camera for 2 weeks and my first entry came in at 8. After that I guess I thought I would do good each time and expected higher score than wot I got. Each entry after scored progressively lower and would question why and rant and rave.
Got sick of that and thought that I scored low coz most ppl didnt think much of it, and there must be a reason.
Thats when I looked at some of the past winners and knew what talent was here include yourself Nasti and Kiwi. Seeing photos like yours is part of what inspired me to continue taking photos. I took a fair break and came back with a different attitude thanx to seeing photos like yours.
In other words: Dont Go. Dont let it get to you. ......For my sake.

Nasti, I am envious of the quality of your work and how you have mastered the craft of photography. DPC has changed and will continue to change, but being exposed to critique and other's work has been a tremendous help to me. Generally, my crappy shots have gotten what they deserved, and if the critic and I disagree that's okay...photography is very personal after all. But looking at your folio is inspiring and I hope you will continue to reward us with your work. PS: I also have shifted my objective, as others have said, and use the site to get out and shoot and please myself rather than be concerned about whether it is pleasing to everyone else.

Anastasia, I have seen your portfolio a few days ago, and I can say that you leaving would be a huge loss for the DPChallenge site and we would miss you very much, you are a brilliant photographer! It's a shame that the great photographers have to make decisions that they want to leave, because there must be something really bad about things around. I guess many others think about it like you. I don't know so much about the circumstances, but, if I could convince you anyhow to stay, I would do it for sure.

I really hope you change your mins Anastasia, as I have been a fan of your work for quite some time, your shots are sensational.

I get down about some of the votes and lack of feedback as well. In my case my photos are average, but I wish I could get more feedback on some of them.

Mind you, I only just found out you are Kiwi's (very much not doubt) better half, and he's another of my favorite photographers. Prehaps one of you needs to leave, as there is far too much talent in your household!!!!! ;)

I consider myself to be in that 300 you talk about, and I really wish you would be more encouraging to the less experienced hobbyists out there. It would make the experience more enjoyable for all!

First of all, your work is great! I have enjoyed seeing your work here. But, rather than getting burned out in a particular competition, for whatever reason, take a break. I had a combination of being really busy and a little bit of burn out. I have not entered the last couple of weeks. I have been putting my efforts into my "Photo Journal" project on PBase. A new community has evolved on PBase, surrounding the daily 'Photo a Day' project so many people are doing there. You can see links to some of the galleries here:
//www.pbase.com/jdanderson/a_shot_a_day
I have also been participating at some other contest sites, and have even won some cash and some prizes! It is kind of refreshing me to try some new things, but I am far from 'finished' with DPChallenge. It is still a great concept, and a great community. After my breather from the challenges, I'll come back and participate again. I felt that an absence for a little while was better than going until it became frustrating to me. Give yourself a break... go have some fun elsewhere and then come back with a fresh mind towards the challenges.
Don't give it up entirely!

JD Anderson

Everyone has a photo that doesn't do well once in a while :) Shake it off and keep shooting :)

I know what you mean, girl. (((hugs))) I have been feeling this same way. The scores are going down quick.
Everyone seems to be saying "me me me"! Some folks need to understand that their photo isn't going to do any better if they score others photos lower.
I also think people need to look at the photo and study it, try to understand. Not just click on a number between 1-10.
Just my added thoughts.
I hope you at least stay in hopes something will change with the voting system.

Come on kiwi, kill him! :-))) Anastasia is really a brilliant photographer, and I guess she was not joking at all. :-( I wish she would stay, now after all I have seen alll those wonderful photos she shot, and added her as a favourite, too.

I think it's also the problem, that a lot of people come here only led by curiosity. They register because they want to see the shots during the voting, they can't wait the results. Maybe vote rights should be given only after a couple of experiences? And only comment rights first? I don't know, it's hard to manage this side, and people are pretty different. I challenge on a similar Hungarian site like this, it's really a small community, we have 120 members, but only ~20 submissions at each assignment... and this voting problem also started there.

About grace... hard job, I think. The challenge goes on a pretty interesting way, maybe a lot of good photographers will have enough of it. I am not one of them, actually, but I think I understand what they are all saying. Those who vote low, maybe they are not brave enough to give their names to their opinion, especially if it's a negative one.

Just a little different thinking here...

If 1 is bad and 10 is good, then 5 would be average. Perhaps the overall average is getting better, which would mean that a photo which received a 7 last year (because it was above average) is now an average photo, meaning a 5. The overall lowering of scores may just mean that everyone has gotten better.

But vonautsch, have you ever seen Anastasia's shots? I think she is far above average! And I guess she was not talking about the average (5 scored) challengers like me.

She said wonderful photos were being scored lowed. She didn't say her photos were, though I'm sure there are people who do score them unjustly low. And yes, I have seen her shots and find them marvelous.

The truth is we are getting more and more snapshots in challenges!
Also truth is that someones trash is someones treasure!{my child is the most beautiful}
Earlier I was ranting about adding filter for submitted photos, where panel of judges (who know what the hell they are doing} filter submitted photos and let maximum of 100 into a challenge!
We will get more quality and I don't have to look at bunch of crap in Grace challenge{including mine].
I mean we don't let all 50 contestants from USA states to go to the Miss World contest!

OK Kiwi, to make it fair we'll need some sort of handicap system though as you're sooooo much older than me. :P

But it's really unfair from those who do it. :-( I also think she was not talking only about herself, but I guess if she had, she also had absolutely right.

Why not? Surely you wouldn't turn down the other 49 beautiful women?
