Me too, I am not an expert of lenses. For the time being, I have decided to use just the 18-135mm kit lens, which gives me maximum flexibility of focal length when I go out, as I often like to shoot candids.
I do not tend to consider lens luminosity and vibration reduction as essential features (considering their cost), but I rather increase ISO when needed.
Other problems like distortion and color aberration become minor ones with the PTlens Photoshop plugin.

I have DXO Optics Pro, and only plan to purchase lenses that this program supports, it's that good.

Can't say a whole lot about favorite lenses as I only have one at this time, the Nikkor 18-200 VR. It meets the majority of my needs without having the inconvenience of having to change lenses to achieve the same focal range. The only downside I've found so far is that this lens does not excel in low light situations. I'm looking at the Nikkor 50 1.8 or 1.4 to help with the indoor/low light needs. This could, of course be remedied by buying a good flash (drooling again over the SB800) but the flash would be more expensive than eigher of these lenses. Decisions, decisions *sigh*.

Does anyone have first hand experience with the 50 1.8 & 1.4? What is your impression of both?
01/11/2007 12:05:22 PM · #54
I had the 50 f1.4 and sold it to get the 18-200VR. I had the 18-200VR for about 3 days and sold it on ebay for $150.00 more than I paid for it. I was not impressed by the 18-200, I thought it was way over rated. The 50 f1.4 is a great lens, very sharp, however for the difference in price I would get the 1.8 and then buy DXO Optics. I got a $100.00 gift certificate from Wolf Camera and will probably use it on the 50 f1.8.

The lens I used most often is the 18-200 VR but I have to say my favorite lens is the 50mmm F1.4. It's actuall approx. 75mm-85-mm because our D80 is a 4:3 format ( correct me if I am wrong ) so it should be a nice lens to shoot potraits with very good depth of field. SO far I am still looking for a suitable model. I have yet to go up to someone and ask, " Hey, will you model for me ? "

krgl,

The 50mm lens actually gives the view of a 75mm lens due to the 1.5x focal length multiplier. This is due to the digital sensor diagonal measurement being 1.5 times smaller than the diagonal of 35mm film.

You can find a more in-depth explanation of this (with pictures to illustrate the effect) HERE.

Kyle, I see you have a boat load of glass, what is your favorite wide angle lens? I was looking at the Tokina 12-24 and the Sigma 10-20.

I am usually a Nikon person but I am pleasantly surprsied by how great the Sigma 10-20 zoom is. I read several artciles stating that it performs better than the Nikon Wide angle zoom, so I tried it. It's worth every penny !

ok, now that we are officially not in WPL4, what do you think about a "what if" simulation. We can calculate our best 4 picture average every week and see how do we would have placed in the championship.

This way we can prepare better for the next season (-:

Besides the song title, the other photos I sent are anti-dpc I guess, I still like them thought more than the first one.
In a few days you will know what I mean (-:

Okay guys, for the second time I ended up unsubmitting a photo from a challenge in the last 5 minutes for fear of a poor score (in this case the "Match" challenge). Both times I've regretted doing so. Here is my latest bailed photo submission. How would you have voted? What are your thoughts? The title is "aglow". Thanks!

I've got to stop second guessing myself.

I'd have voted it a 6. Simple, good composition.

Nothing ventured nothing gain. I would have give it an 8.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It is sincerely appreciated.

Of course this confirmed what I feared. An opportunity lost. From now on once I hit submit, for better or worse, it's staying put.

I try to submit to every challlege even if it may lower my average scores - I think that's the only way to get better.
p.s. I've submitted to all recent contests, let's see how I do. :)
Wish me luck !
