Hi All- long time no talk! I've been very busy here in Australia and have taken thousands of photos but haven't spent much time focusing on my photography, more just recording the progress of our housebuilding project and "new life".

Anyway, today I have a bizarre new problem that I'm hoping someone here will recognize. I'm using a Nikon D70 and a 1GB Viking Interworks compact flash card. After shooting maybe 50 or so photos yesterday and today, when I went to download the contents of the card looked like this: //ameralia.net/CFCard.jpg

There were 67 files or folders on the card, all unreadable, and as you can see the file sizes and dates are ridiculous. Properties indicate that there are 98.6 GB of files on my 1GB card!!

Has anybody seen anything like this before? In the last week or so when shooting there have been a couple files that have recorded to the card but were then unreadable, either on the camera or by the PC- though I can't be sure it was this card I had the problem with each time, as I swap out cards a lot.

Any ideas would be most helpful- I can't even imagine where to start googling for this problem!! Thanks all.

Andi

Have you tried formating the card with the camera and taking new pictures?

I'm hoping to salvage the photos before I try formatting the card!

I have a suggestion. Instead of using your camera and its cf card as a computer....don't. Why is it necessary to have all those directories? It looks like you are storing a bunch of pics on your card for some reason. When you are thru shooting for the day, put the pics in your pc (or mac), back them up on a cd and re-format your card In Your Camera.

I simply shoot to the card and download to my PC every day or every other day. I don't create directories and I don't "store" anything on the card. I didn't create a single file or directory you see in that screenshot. The photos I shot yesterday and today aren't even on the card, apparently. That is my problem!

it does look like the file system on the card is garbled. If the FAT (File Allocation Table) is buggered, it will probably be unlikely you'll recover any photos off the card. you can try recover software, there's no harm in trying.
It's not certain that it's a card problem, but it is likely. I suggest that you take taht card out of use, reformat each of your other cards in the camera, mark each one of them, and see if the problem crops up again. If it does, note the number of the card that gave the problem. If it keeps happenign on different cards, it's very likely not the cards. If it refuses to happen again, try using the suspect card on some shots that are not critical or irreproducible.

Well, I could not know that by your post. Sorry, have a nice day.

Her post made perfect sense to me. Don't get all in a wad and be rude. Gosh.

Rude?

Whether or not Andi put them there, they are a problem. For this reason it is best to move images off the CF card after every shoot, then reformat the card in the camera when you put it back in. That gets rid of all the unnecessary garbage. Also, and I may be wrong on this, but I don't think if the FAT got screwed up it means the card is necessarily bad or unusable. Very likely a reformat will get it working again; it's worth a try.

Or maybe not... If you don't trust it, why risk it? Cards aren't that expensive.

I actually had the same problem with my D70 and a Viking card. What i was told was that Viking is not actually an approved card for the D70 (apparently Ultra II's aren't either)... have you had this happen a lot? it started out infreguently for me and then got worse ... to the point where i had to try and recover over 200 wedding photos from my card before upgrading to the d70s

good luck

What happens if you use the camera USB cable?

Your opinion, sir. :) Please allow me mine. Perhaps we define rude differently.
