No, no, I didn't mean for you to rethink your theme. I really am curious about those things. Oh well.

So do I. It's not so easy to try and figure out what theme to go for though. I'm really looking forward to seeing what might come out of this.

Just because I'm wondering, isn't that a bit too broad a theme? Don't get mad now, OK. But I thought the point John was making was that it might be helpful to produce a sort of "cohesive body of work", that is, to explore something or another in depth, which is learning, of course, but in a more pointed manner?

I am just curious why it seems that many of us are so reluctant to commit to a theme for any length of time (or at least it seems like that to me). I think the idea of committing to a theme for whatever length of time would really produce good results, or at the least it would be an interesting experiment.

Hey, Lisa, I'm not picking on you, I'm really wondering about these things.

The other thing I've been curious about is why is it that when people commit to a theme it usually seems to be "people", photos of people; not always, but it seems to be the most common theme.

Learning, in of itself is a fine goal. It isn't an outward or results focused PaW, which is what John is hinting at, but it shouldn't not be a reason to do a PaW. The commitment of producing one fine image a week is maybe enough and committing to that process will certainly move things forward.

A more outward or results focused PaW might have as the goal a cohesive portfolio. Perhaps it makes sense to consider the target up front - be it a book, or gallery show, or a set of prints, or a calendar. Though also it might just make sense to see how it evolves and let it shape the end result - again both are valid ways to go.

One thing seems to be clear - the subject/theme has to inspire & motivate you, and it also has to be ready to hand. If you live in the mid-west of the US and decide 'Asian temples' as your PaW subject you will either be traveling a lot or being quite creative - if that's good or bad is up to you I suppose.

People come up a lot I think because many photographers have so many issues with photographing people. The push from a PaW can help. Also they are quite a readily accessible subject. The other thing I've found is having a reason, however insignificant can really help when approaching someone to take their picture and also with them accepting it.

Consider:
Hi, I'd like to take your picture.
Why do you want to do that ?
Oh, urm, no reason, I just like taking pictures, urm, want to shoot people more.

Or

Hi, I'd like to take your picture as I'm doing a Portrait a Week project this year. I'm aiming to take 52 great portraits this year and I want you to be part of that. It might end up in a gallery or book and you'll certainly hear about it if you are in it!

So the PaW, or project gives some validation to doing it all in the first place.

Least, that's how its been working for me.

I would like to do this, but I'm not sure where to start with the blog space. Are some of them free? My theme would be Southwest Missouri, unless that is too broad.

Blogger is free and integrates with Flickr. That's what I'm using for my blog (link below)

I've been thinking lately about how much my friends and family mean to me, and how often they've been there to support me over the years. Particularly through my achingly long education (finally through now....for a bit!) So I think that's what I'm going to choose. I'll do a portrait-ish shot a week of my friends and family.

That's almost exactly the project I started working on about 6 weeks ago. I need to push on through it - its fun, but still requires organisation and co-ordination. The story so far

I really want to do this. Now if I could just think of an idea that will keep me motivated...
12/19/2006 09:32:46 PM · #67
This is a great idea. Finding the "purpose" that will bring life to the project is the key, I guess. I'll have to think about this one, I really need a tangible project to relieve my extreme case of photographic constipation.

I did (or at least attempted) the 2006 PAD project, and made it to mid-August having a post every day. It has gone downhill from there, but I think I'll at least make 300 photos. When I started it, my goal was to end up with enough good shots to put into a calendar at the end of the year to give as Christmas gifts, and I achieved that goal (yay!)

The thought of another PAD is frightening, but the idea of a PAW sounds much better. I have a few ideas for themes I might like to explore, but I'll give it some more thought and set up a new blog. I agree with what hopper said in an earlier post.. there is something about the way you present the photos that helps this process. Looking at my tiny pics on blogger wasn't very appealing, then I'd go visit mk's blog and be in awe of how professionally her shots were presented in comparison.

Hmmm, these are all great arguments for a PAW instead of a PAD. I may have to switch projects. :)

Wow how did I miss this thread. Count me in for PAW this sounds great! I'll set up a site in the next couple of days...well hopefully I've never done such a thing, I'll go back and reread everything and holler if I get stuck.

Now a theme, I love street photography but I've never tried it, it freaks me out a bit so it's time to be brave and hit the streets. Hopefully I won't get beat up in the first week.

I'm thinking about using the theme idea Old.
Broad enough to be able to explore in a variety of ways - yet still has it's limitations.

I also have a question - Are we to limit the post processing and stick to the advanced rules or is it more of an anything goes (as long as it doesn't loose the original idea of bettering our photography skills).

This sounds like a good idea for me as I need something longer term than the challenges! :-)

I have some ideas for themes and focus but this is something that can fester over the Christmas holidays.

Personally, I think this should either be to "expert" rules or "basic" - but that is probably because I tend to enjoy being extreme or very simple.

Since this is not a challenge, you are free to constrain yourself in any way you wish, or not at all.

Some other constraints to think about:

One place, or anywhere
One lens, or anything goes
One tonal palette, or anything
One subject, or a changing theme
One shot, or pick from a bunch ( I saw a PaD project with only one shot taken per day - outstanding work)
Only on a tripod, only handheld.
Only shallow DoF, only everything mostly in focus
Only available light, or enhanced lighting

and so on
